I must have blinked and missed the controversy
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
I just looked at a bunch of Lincoln cent Whitman Deluxe albums on eBay and couldn’t find any that had a hole for the controversial 1965 Denver Double Dot cent. 🧐

Heh heh, look what I just bought, I’ll be rolling in the cash once this variety starts taking off 💰

My vote for most controversial coin of the twentieth century would be the 1933 Saint Gaudens double eagle.

"Everything you say should be true, but not everything true should be said."----Voltaire
I remember the ads in CoinWorld for the ‘double dot’ cent
In coinWorld and Numismatics news at the time.
…..was never impressed with it
I see three dots.
I see four dots.
Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.
Got a few of those. Did not buy them, received as a gift.
Type I Standing Liberty Quarter has my vote.

Controversial? In what way?
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
Is it true that this means it was minted in Denver? Maybe that’s part of the controversy 🧐

1964-D Dollar
I see four and a half now 😆
When I find my example, I will post it.
What is the date of that ad?
Some of the early copper plated zinc Lincoln cents were covered with raised dots.

I am a little sad. I opened this expecting to see a 1916 Std. Qtr. Never even heard of the other thing. James

How many dots do you see?

“Is this still the most controversial coin of the 20th century??“
No. That, which never was in the first place, can’t “still” be, now.

I think that it was pretty much dead by 1970. I remember seeing it advertised in magazines like "Coins"
Never heard of it, and a lot of other numismatic related news was happening in 1965.
So, is this something our resident roll searchers should put on their lists?

Lots of dots in the ad. Those prices $12.50,$19.50 etc. And A N.A.,S.C.N.A., T.N.A.😀
Looks like they were in business from 1963 to 1975

Yea, that's why coin grading is so subjective. You never see all of the dots the first go round.
Anyway, what were we talking about again
That sounds about right. I remember similar ads at that time promoting these types of coins as the next 1955 double die.
Only on British coins do dots get such a rise, to wit the 1936 penny

There's an Indian variety of the 1927 Australian Large Penny that has one more dentil than normal. It sells at a substantial premium to the other Pennies of this date. I think the normal one was 168 dentils, and the Indian variety has 169. The only reason I know this is that I was going through a friend's late father in law's coins. He traveled quite a bit and had a 1927 Australian Large Penny that would grade MS 63 BN.

I'm a Kansas City area guy since the early 80s and never heard of Barchers. A little googling pointed me to the Newman Numismatic Portal so I ran this: https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/searchwithterms?searchterm=barchers
Barchers appears to have had two locations on Troost St. in the first half of the 60s. But then around 66 the address I see is the 3802 Broadway address. That doesn't even seem to be an address anymore, but 3800 Broadway is a check cashing joint. :-)

THERE...ARE...FOUR...DOTS!!!
Two unc. 1965 double dot cents recently went for $7.50 each on eBay. Not a great return on investment, but it still beats the 1950-D nickel.

For the "youngsters" on the forum, here's a little background. Back in mid-60s, "hole-plugging" your Whitman folders was still all the rage and, at that time, Whitman had already pre-printed folders with a hole for the "1965-D" Lincoln Cent. The "Double Dot" cent, therefore, became a "gimmick" for dealers to sell a coin to fill that hole since the Mint had stopped putting mint marks on the coins. You see, the "Double Dot" cent was initially found in rolls released by banks in the Kansas City area and, therefore, they must have come from the Denver mint. So, if you could convince collectors to buy a "Double Dot" cent, they could fill the 1965-D hole in their folders. Coin World was filled with ads for this promotion for a while in late '65 and early '66.
