It’s not “unlike gambling”, it is gambling. The fact that participants don’t lose their “entire bet”, doesn’t change that.

Please note, I’m not condemning the activity, just opposed to any attempt to distinguish it from gambling.

Ok Mark. Hey everyone! VB is gambling. 🙄

probably not, but even if the quartz is a third of the grams it is still a nice win!

This is the first thread that I’ve ever seen about mystery boxes that is someone positive and civil.

    Go VB!

    You jinxed it!

I briefly talked to Brandon (very recently formerly of Witter Coin) about mystery boxes yesterday, among other topics. Interesting conversation.

@Desert Moon "Taken"??? Is every single decision someone makes in their life based on financial utility only? Is someone taken buying groceries at Whole Foods instead of Walmart? Is someone taken playing golf at Pebble Beach instead of the local dog track? Is someone taken playing blackjack? What about all of the people gambling in Super Bowl pools tomorrow?

The risks and expenses are fully disclosed. I like coins. I have disposable income. Instead of gambling on the game tomorrow, I chose to gamble on VB despite knowing it is hugely minus EV. Was I taken?

I never said anyone else cannot do it. I stated my reasons for opting out. 1. This is unregulated gambling. 2. Most people playing lose 50% or more based on previous VB’s. I did not do a calculation for this one but I assume it is similar.

Hence, for me, I choose to not do this. If others wish to, feel free.

Counter point: The excitement is real! See post above by lermish getting a 99.92 gram gold nugget 🥳🥳🥳

No different than gambling at a casino. 😉

Except casino gambling is regulated to be legal…………………………….

I love the gold nuggets! I agree with the sentiment that it’s not the coolest shape per gram but it’s amazing for being almost 100 grams!

@lermish Thanks for posting the nugget. I do collect a few nuggets but not nearly that large. Seems like all the big nuggets have some sort of quartz mixed in. In any event, I'd bet it was easy to sell.

I remember back in the 70's, scratch-off lottos were new here in NY. Every time a new one came out there was a little flyer on the counter where they were sold. The flyer explained what they were all about, and gave the odds of winning. I would buy a scratch-off and grab a little flyer. After some time, the flyers piled up on the backseat floor of my car. When cleaning the car, I started to read them. As each new one came out, the odds got a little worse. Lesson learned.
I think this may be a common tactic on successful sales campaigns.

I think if you read a little more carefully, you would find that the $ adjusted odds did NOT change. NY lottery take out is mandates by law. What they did with later issues was create larger prizes which have corresponding lower odds. But the overall $ adjusted odds were always 40 to 50%.
