New to me: Trader Bea PCGS Holder

TypekatTypekat Posts: 432 ✭✭✭✭

The most colorful PCGS holder I’ve ever seen. What’s the story?

Can we get a pic of the reverse?

He's a high-volume online dealer out of Nebraska. Lots of folks like these holders; he has an NGC version too. I suspect this won't be the last one you see.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

One of the largest sellers on whatnot. Does all the vault box breaks and has his own series of breaks that these slabs are usually the “winners”

I wouldn't buy a valuable coin in one of these but I do like the design as a low cost or sample slab.

Reminds me of some of the Asian specialty slabs https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/collectors-showcase/world-coins/asian-city-collection-sample-slab-236-388-extras/17609

I guess if you get enough coins slabbed and pay a fee, you can get any design you want within reason.

    This answer is exactly correct.

Trader Bea (aka Bjorn) is a nice guy who is one of, if not the single biggest coin streamer on WhatNot. Pretty remarkable how frequently he is streaming there selling coins. His colored cores seem to have a small following, but I agree with @messydesk -- not my personal cup of tea.

    I like it.

I’ve noticed a few of these recently on eBay. For slab security reasons, this is a bad idea.

Seems like Bjorn is trying to make coin collecting ‘fun’ and ‘’popular’ with a younger audience.

    Is that bad?

Nothing bad about it. Our hobby certainly benefits from having more Trader Bea's out there for the exact reason you mentioned @Typekat.

FWIW, I just personally don't feel connected to the colored slabs, but my opinion means diddly squat because he's not making them for me; he's making them for his own audience, which is only growing larger based on on how many people watch his streams regularly.

  • Good information here, thanks to all and happy new year!

Interesting to hear about this Bjorn in Nebraska. I'll have to check out his site and find out where he is in Nebraska. I don't care for his holders, though.

Last time I saw Bjorn, his wife’s hair was the same color: blue. Not implying she is a “blue-hair”

Gaudy gimmicky slabs just cheapen the brand. :#

Regardless of how you look at it, that ship has sailed. Trader Bea, Vaultbox, Ultrabreaks, Witter Bricks, First Strikes, autographs, NGCx, Bag Frags, white/black/red/green/blue/purple plastic inserts, oversized holders, etc. My "old guy gripe" is that with all of these "innovations," no one can seem to replicate the SEGS topside label where you can read what the coin is when stored. : )

    You mean like ANACS holders?

Agree. With the proliferation of counterfeit PCGS slabs, having dozens of different slab designs make it more difficult for the casual collector to avoid the counterfeit slabs.

There is a NFC logo on the holder (i.e., obverse side of coin, lower left corner).

But, you are right about the fact that the usual NFC symbol is missing from the label. Also, appears to be missing the usual hologram strip.

As an aside, there is nothing in the 'cert verification' about the holder being unique. If PCGS is going to continue to do these, they should consider identifying them as different.

When it comes to these kind of custom holders/labels/inserts, I'm classifying them as variant-production just like a collector's pedigree. Unless they explicitly say sample.

That reminds me, I need to update the white paper.

So OP's PCGS slab would be

    Label type 9 (non standard)

Label: Purple, TraderBea name and logo
    Insert: Purple, TraderBea hexagon pattern

SInce there is no non-standard label text, I omit the Obv: and Rev: data.

    The NGC version would be

    Label type 9 (non standard)

Label: Purple with impresionist background with dark grey bee and honeycomb segment logo right
    Insert: Solid Purple

    (better photos here: https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/8158652-103/66/)

There are also Trader Bea samples from WhatNot

    Label type 9

Label: Yellow with WhatNot logo top right
    Obv: SAMPLE / TraderBea Event / 10/25/2024
    Hologram: NCG enhanced QR code
