Bob48- Thank you for your research and documentation. I am still looking for a type 1 Washington D.C. cert to finish my set, yet another interesting way to collect coins.

  • bob48bob48 Posts: 460 ✭✭✭

The new cert found by Conder101 I am calling a type 4.1 It is the type 4 label with the MM ruler on the reverse.
I do have one but I can't get pictures loaded on this forum.
If you would like to see it, PM me and I can send you the picture.
Also anyone I send it to, If you can get picture in here you could post it for all to see,
    Thanks

Those two type 4.1 look great, thanks for posting the pictures of them.

Anyone got a type 1 cert to show a picture of?
I have one, no coin as it is a G$10 Eagle but the cert in hand looks different then what I have in the article. The cert and picture are the same but the article picture is just misleading as to how it really looks.

I just missed out on this one yesterday, someone bought it as I was putting it in my cart. I'm sorry it got away, there can't be too many of these out there. It's a Type 8 transfer but is dated later than Type 8's were supposed to have been made according to your article. Any thoughts?

  • bob48bob48 Posts: 460 ✭✭✭

Nice type-8 transfer. maybe the person that bought also noticed it was a transfer.
This is the first one I have seen.
As far as the late date goes, that is just the transfer date, Don't know why it was not put on a type-9 photo cert.

I was the lucky one who scored it.
    Not in hand yet...
I did buy because it's a transfer, only transfer I have ever seen for sale.
    Cool Capitol plastic too.

I missed that one on eBay. But the title of the coin did not use "photo" in it anywhere.
    Nice holder too!
Many years ago when I started looking for these I found a lot of transfers, no one was really collecting them until I released my article, then it was over two years before things settled down enough and I could start buying them again. I do have 56 certs with the coins, but I now have a lot of just pictures that were sent to me by fivecents.
Congrats on the Photo cert. Sandman70gt

Congrats to @Sandman70gt you got me by seconds. I will have to be content that I was able to score a standard type 8 which I needed from the seller the next day. Now I just have to find a Type 1...

Bump for old time's sake. I went on the ANACS payroll Nov. 1, 1978, though the first three days I spent driving from Sidney, OH to Colorado Springs.

Since we're bumping the old thread. An update from my previous post. My search for a Type 1 was successful, just under a year later I was alerted to an auction where I picked this one up. Love these old certs...
@CaptHenway Any recollection of the first coin you certified?

I founded ANAAB in 1990, It as put to bed four years after I resigned from the ANA Sept 1998. Until 2002, I was the unpaid consultant that helped keep it alive. Robert Hoge had left for the ANS in 2001 and ANAAB was in the hands of a new intern. The ANA thought they might want to keep it as a member benefit, but they did not want to spend the money for an experienced reliable, authenticator. I convinced Ruthann (CEO) and Patty Finner (President) to either fund it or kill it as I did not want it to embarrass the ANA. At $15 and $8 return postage it was not worth the effort or liability it created. J.P. Martin

I have been working on this for a couple of months and would like to share it with anyone that likes the photo certs.
I have 10 types of certificates all with pictures, so it is a good reference. Some of ANACS history and some quotes by one of the graders that started the grading service on March 1st 1979
If you would like a copy, you will need to PM me with an email address.
I don't have someplace I can set up a link for you to down load it.
I have found that the research was fun and very interesting. I have learned allot for this project.
I hope you have as much fun reading it as I did collecting the information.

Here is the link to the article. scroll down the page and the first down load is my article by Robert Paul
    https://sites.google.com/site/sampleslabbook/downloads

It covers 11 certs and one new one was found by Conder101 its like a type 4 with the MM ruler on the reverse. (like the type 5) So there is 12 types known.

I just read your article at samplslabbook site - very nice and very informative bob48 +++

That was a great article for any folks that might have an interest in the old ANACS photo certs.

Read this for the first time today. I am 70 years old so I may have read it originally in 2012 and just don't remember. I own a few of the ANACS photo certs along with the coins still. Most are more sentimental value than dollar value so I see no need in getting them slabbed by any TPG.

I really appreciate this thread resurfacing. Thanks Bob.
