    Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.

    "LIBERTY" is exceptionally bold. I suspect that if the coin is viewed in person the band will be much more evident than in the photo. What does concern me is the marks in the field behind Liberty's neck. It looks like something may have been scraped off, leaving some marks. There may actually be some remaining luster evident in the recessed areas of the fields. It is a coin that should be viewed in-hand.

    It’s a classic EF-45 with lots of design detail hints of surviving mint luste.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    It's certainly XF-45 but those black spots on the obverse will make it a problem coin for some collectors.

    They aren't bad and the coin is nice enough for almost any collection but I'd want to pay XF-40 price for it.

    They look like they'd come off in olive oil.

    Hard to tell from the static image, I think XF45 as a floor. I see what looks like some luster peeking through at 12 and 6, but would need to see a video to confirm the extent of it. I think on the high end it could be a 53.

    subdued luster , ugly album toning.
    I’m not a proponent of dipping but it seems clear to me , there’s an AU specimen under the ugly ( which is pretty to me ) So don’t dip. Sparkly ticks and hits will appear.

    Forget about "restoration" or slabbing as the coin isn't worth the cost or risk it won't turn out well. The coin would look great in an album collection just as it is.
