1989-D design variety or DDR?
I don't yet have the Cherry Pickers Guide, but I did look at variety vista at 1989 & 1989-D for either a design variety where the "E" in "AMERICA" had a serif or similar looking DDR but didn't find anything that looked similar.

Here is the reverse. The serif "E" can be seen with the naked eye on "AMERICA"

It appears to be a ‘hit’ or contact Mark
On the “E“ – look at the letter next to it - the R – there’s a hit there, too
It’s not a serif or design change – it’s a circulation mark.
I agree, just damage from taking a hit.

If you are truly interested in learning, focus on the known varieties. You may want to buy some cheap ones to study. Under good magnification, you will begin to notice the attributes of the "real deal" vs the imaginary.

The coin is the dreaded PMD (Post Mint Damage) and not an undiscovered variety.

If you need a microscope it probably has little collector value.
