GTG 1798 Bust Dollar GRADE REVEALED

Freshly graded by our host, i was somewhat surprised by the grade, i won’t tip my hand positive or negative until folks chime in….i’ll reveal Saturday morning


I bought the coin raw correctly, and wanted it in a holder to facilitate a sale, i believed the “busyness” by the obverse motto would prevent a straight grade.
Clearly the coin looks much better in hand than the pics, i took these with my Ipad.
Without bashing i think the important message here is the imaging needs some help.

    I'd Guess XF45, although it could be details due to the rim dings.

    I agree with bill although I would have said vf25. The L in Liberty area and rim dings speak to a hard life but a loop may say something different

    The area around "LI" in Liberty looks like it has been worked on. Add in the rim dings and it belongs in a details holder, probably VF something.

    With the OP being somewhat surprised by the grade (and thinking to myself the photo is slightly washed out) I'd venture
    a straight grade of XF40.

    If I had to assign a number with the VF, either 20 or 25

    I'm seeing VF details as well. I'd say 25 if pressed for a numerical grade... the coin looks cleaned to my eye, but I think the rim damage prevents a straight grade.

    If the slab shots are anywhere close to accurate, you did (edited) somewhat of a disservice to participants by doing a Guess The Grade thread, based on the non-slab shots you first posted. And if they're not, what does the coin look like?

    I had a feeling the original photo was a washed out and overexposed TV, consistent with the quality as of late, and the coin probably looked darker in hand.

    The coin looks like a dog in the original pictures and looks much nicer in the slab shots. The color is much better and the rim dings are barely noticeable and based on those pictures straight grading the coin seems reasonable.

    The skin color looks a lot better in the new images, the rim dings a little less pronounced in the holder, but it still looks “worked on” in the LIB area.
    So I’m still surprised at the straight grade, but on the bright side there’s now hope my bust dollar with a few rim hits may someday straight grade if I ever submit it!

    I thought i was being transparent throughout the whole thread.
    The fist photo is the Trueviews provided by PCGS, i then posted pics taken with my ipad.
    I thought there were a lot of comments that felt the same way i did about the coin.

    I don’t think you intended to be other than transparent. My point was, that if the coin looks close to how it shows in the slab shots, then it doesn’t look like the initial images that were posted and upon which people made their assessments. The more accurate the images, the better the opportunity for meaningful assessments, discussion and learning.

    It does not look like the same coin. It shows how photography can make a coin look good or bad.

    Wow! The first images now look overexposed and the angle of the shot makes the rim hit look more pronounced. Nice pickup and I'm glad you got it into a straight graded holder...

    Still too many rim dings for me (one is too many usually). But the slab photos show much better color.
