What are your 2024 collecting goals and resolutions?

It’s almost 2024, and I know from past threads on the forum that many folks (myself included) like to use the transition into the new year as an opportunity to consider—and perhaps reset or change—their collecting objectives.

I had a few goals this year that I posted in the 2023 thread, including buying my first pattern (check), completing my Peace Dollars (check), making progress on my Washington Q set (check) and finishing my WLH CAC Proof set (not quite).

As I think about 2024, the two things that are top of mind for me are:
1. Have more patience. I bought a lot this year, and while I’ve added some incredible coins, I want to slow the pace to ensure I’m being thoughtful. That may mean fewer coins this year, or perhaps just fewer “net” coins (see second point).
2. Become a regular seller on the BST. I enjoy the placing coins with other collectors, interacting with folks on the forum, and buying/selling. I may start a monthly selling post the first Sunday of each month, or something like that.


What are your goals, objectives, and/or resolutions for next year?

    Staying loose about this -- there are 18 items on my watch/want list, only one of which is cheap, so any purchase for the core collection is likely to be a serious consideration. After 26 years in my current field I'm leaning toward initiating a pretty significant career change later in the year, which will mean a couple-few years of reduced earnings at first, so that's a factor. I bought more than I usually do in 2023, so 24 might be more about study and enjoyment than acquisition for me. We'll see ...

    Same here. I have sporadic collecting habits all over the place. My goal like most of you is to slow down and focus on one collection at a time. I'm hoping to finish my 1 Ounce Silver Libertad collection in 2024 and go from there.

    For 2024 I am planning to start a new series. Just ordered a book on Three Cent Nickels so I can start researching.

    Subject to my job and family situation....I'd love to get that nice 1908 No Motto Saint or even -- if things go very well -- an MCMVII High Relief, though I think that will require a few years of saving up. :)

    As a collector - I hope to add at least one more tough half cent to my set, and maybe start something new.

    As a member of the forum - I hope not to get sucked into as many threads that add no value to me or others.

    I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

    Cut back on my raw 2x2 box. Have a amount of stuff in there I don't want and should probably move. Would like to focus more in graded coins so I may get a few of them graded for my box of 20.

    I feel like I've done pretty well picking out quality coins that I like with me only buying one coin for my collection this year so I hope to continue that. College eating up most of my time as it should. :)

    Twenty years ago I bought my first PCGS Barber dime. I added two and upgraded four in 2023. I now have 44 out of 74 MS Barber dimes with 30 more to go.

    Gives me something to look forward to in 2024 and beyond.

    Amazingly I was able to complete two collections or series this year picking up two key dates that cost me a small fortune. I'm making my goal to be budget friendly in 2024; enjoy what I've assembled and just be grateful for what I have.

    I really enjoy hunting raw moderns especially when they hit the grade.
    Over the past few years I have accumulated enough to sell it all and actually buy my first real coin.

    I’m leaning towards a Barber half but the $10 Indians won’t leave me alone.
    Maybe one of each I don’t know yet as it will be a tough decision to put all of the eggs in one big deplorable basket.

    All the while I’ll still be doing what I love and hopefully more profitable from better finds and less tuition mistakes.

    Specifically, I want to finish my Canadian $10 gold set, and my George V sovereign mint set. (Need all three Australian mints)

    Well... most of my collecting goals for 2023 were met! Finished the 7070 Type Set and finished the Date run of Middle Date LCs and start on Redbook varieties.

    My goals for 2024:
    1. Be patient. Most of the coins on my list now are in the $1-2k price range so newps will be fewer and further between.
    2. Box of 20. I started this in 2022 as I was winding down my 7070. I just acquired 2 more pieces... a Flowing Hair Half Cent and a DMPL Morgan Dollar. So, maybe one piece for this collection... hopefully a decent Fugio Cent.
    3. Large Cents. Continue with Middle Date Redbook varieties, but I also have a completed Late Date run too so i may include those as well. I'm contemplating another stab at a complete Date run of LCs... a 1793 and an 1804 will be difficult, but finding any 1799 seems to be a tall order...
    4. Sell. Not everything, just dupes and engage more on the BST. I really is a good outlet and some of the people I've had the fortune of meeting there are super nice.

    1.To find the last two SLQs to complete my One per Date set.

    2.To Continue buying semi-key and more common date Morgans. I am working on a One per Date set of those, as well

    3.To keep on filling my Seated Dollar Box of 20.

    1. Sell some dupes (VAMs).
    2. Buy fewer coins that turn out to be dupes (which is easier said than done).

    Dust off my Mercury dime Dansco and try to acquire some of the earlier dates in XF or better;

    Continue on my newly-started Barber half registry set - currently 5 coins acquired and anothe newp in the works. The upcoming FUN Show should help move that project along;

    Pick up some proof type examples of a few of my favorite designs - Shield nickel, Liberty nickel and Walking Liberty half dollar (something that has a full thumb), and try to find some perfect-circulated, PCGS-certified, O-mint Barber quarters, with the goal of acquiring all of the O's;

    "Finish" my Canadian Victoria twenty-five cents. I still need 1890-H and 1893 to complete the basic set. From there there are different obverse varieties, repunches and so on. The patience of Job is required to acquire problem-free pieces in any grade.

    (Edited for a coin I already had (1880-H Narrow 0) and one I just bought on eBay (1880-H Wide 0)).

    Stay within budget and hope a few nice coins show up for the series I collect. Even 6-8 new coins would make me happy!!! Also get 10-12 raw coins I purchased in 2023 graded by NGC.

    This is all very doable and realistic.

    Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.

    I would like to start filling some of those holes in my Kennedy complete variety set. To do this, I need to stop doing upgrades on coins that I already have. Does this count as a NEW YEARS RESOLUTION that falls to the wayside come February?

    Nothing major for me as I getting close to retirement and the coin budget is gonna take a hit. Just looking to do some upgrades to my Jefferson and Washington Registry sets.

    Reading through some of these, I also need to pace myself better. As a 2nd goal, I’m upgrading my Morgans and Peace dollars to CAC beaned coins. I plan to do this over several years and fund it by selling the coins I have.
