1838 is one of the most significant years in American coinage with the opening of three branch mints, New Orleans, Charlotte, and Dahlonega.

1838 is also a transition year as we moved away from the older Bust designs to the new Seated Liberty designs. Even within the Seated Liberty coinage, there was a transition from no stars designs to stars on the obverse, which resulted in the 1838-only no stars dimes and half dimes minted at New Orleans.

1838 was the first year for my collecting series, Seated Quarters. Unfortunately the beautiful no drapery design would be a two year only type (1840-o is a transition design) as further adjustments were made to the new Liberty Seated coinage line up.
