Coins Of 1838 ~ Official Thread
![Manifest_Destiny](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/userpics/Q1GX6QTX3T2D/nQF7V38TQHXHM.png)
1838 is one of the most significant years in American coinage with the opening of three branch mints, New Orleans, Charlotte, and Dahlonega.
1838 is also a transition year as we moved away from the older Bust designs to the new Seated Liberty designs. Even within the Seated Liberty coinage, there was a transition from no stars designs to stars on the obverse, which resulted in the 1838-only no stars dimes and half dimes minted at New Orleans.
1838 was the first year for my collecting series, Seated Quarters. Unfortunately the beautiful no drapery design would be a two year only type (1840-o is a transition design) as further adjustments were made to the new Liberty Seated coinage line up.

Actually, the reverse was first used in making 1839 RE CBH.
A date I can post.

This is my favorite little gem!
Since nobody has posted any 1838 New Orleans Half Dimes yet, I'll go ahead and post my 3 humble low grade examples (I love that coin, for some reason).

I have only two. I’ve previously posted the Bust Quarter, bought as an MS64. I sent it back to PCGS via Reconsideration, and despite the “booger” coming out of Liberty’s nose, they agreed and added on a plus. Nice bump up in price for the plus.

My collecting “Pride & Joy” is my PCGS Registry Dansco 7070 Set:

Definitely one of the most historically significant years in US numismatics. This was the first denomination produced at the New Orleans mint.

My Judd-72 pattern 50c dated 1838.
The Mint back in those days often kept pattern dies for decades.
Later, for various & sundry reasons, restrikes were produced.
SO, today it’s sometimes hard to determine WHEN a particular pattern was struck.
