I bought an unstickered coin 😮

AU-58

Yes, and it also happens to be my biggest purchase to date, and my absolute favorite US regular issue coin. It's the first $10 gold coin, and it just so happens to be precisely 200 years before my birth. Ive wanted one of these for as long as I can remember, and this is the first time one has stopped me in my tracks. I spotted it on the bourse at IMEX, and I couldnt stop going back to the coin. For any of you that are familiar with 1795 Eagles, they typically are destroyed and they dont come nice like 1799 or 1801. Even the 1795 $5 can be found nice if your patient, but the 10s are really, really, tough. Its very rare to find one with pretty original color, fantastic luster, a hammered strike, full feather detail on the reverse, and no huge craters or scratches. If you look through auction records, you will see what im talking about.

With that said, some concessions had to be made. The squiggle in the left field is a lint mark/strike through, it is not graffiti. There are some reeding marks in the right field, and some wispy slide marks that the coin picked up somewhere in its glorious life. If something bothered JA, it doesnt bother me and im happy to give this coin a home for a while. The lack of a sticker is also what put this coin in my price range to begin with, but who knows what might happen upon another review or if i were to send it to CACG as a crossover. It was not an easy decision to veer from the CAC road, but im fairly confident in my abilities at this point and at the end of the day we collect COINS, and I have yet to see a circulated example that appeals to me more than this one. Video below for your viewing pleasure.

What a spectacular coin! I’ve considered the 1795 $5 but knew that a $10 would be out of my reach. I’m happy that you took the time to locate one that spoke to you.

It’s mind blowing that you have posted a new coin that is even nicer than the HR Saint you just added to your collection. Needless to say, you’re having a good week.
    Congratulations!!!

I prefer CAC, but my #1 rule is buy eye appeal. That coin certainly has it!!! Congrats!

It would be interesting to discover the various collectors who have owned your coin over the decades.
I also have an impression it will not be leaving your cabinet for a long time.

I really like some of the pioneer issues- Baldwin $10 Horseman, 1860 mormon $5, $50 Kellogg Proofs, however 2/3 of those are beyond my reach and none of them are easy to find.

Sorry but I just can’t take my eyes off the squiggle. I noticed it immediately before I even read your post, and it would’ve been something to give me pause on a six figure coin. I agree the coin should be straight graded, and I also agree it shouldn’t sticker as a 58.

  • Options

It has eye appeal and originality. Many coins are precluded from getting the cac sticker due to "issues" of one type or other where they "would if they could but they can't", they may like the coin but can't stand fully behind it economically.
