    Nice coin!
I looked at this a while ago and thought it was a 20-25. I just didn’t want to be the first to post it. I know @jayPem knows his CBHs and I agree with him on this one!
Lately these CBHs GTGs have been busting my butt!😂

Pleasing, original looking surfaces. It would be interesting how the new CAC company would grade it.

I am in the VF20 camp but have yet to hold an early CBH.

Agree with all the comments about it being a nice example as well as VF 25.

    .
In-hand it definitely looks like an O-102a.

Most obvious is this vertical die crack...

There's also a faint die crack across the "B" extending up to the edge. And notice the tiny crosslines inside the "L".

Anyone know if these crosslines are common in other Bust varieties?

Sweet look! Put me down at 20 to 25, depending on the day. I'd like it either way.

  • I like it at VF20 but wouldn't be surprised to see it in a VF25 slab.

My first thought was VF30, but it's not my series. I do like this example however! Great color!

  • spyglassdesignspyglassdesign Posts: 1,634 ✭✭✭✭✭

My first though was the obverse could be as high as 35-40 but the reverse looks more 20 to 25 ish. I'd guess overall around 25.

  • CalifornianKingCalifornianKing Posts: 1,259 ✭✭✭✭

Guessing VF20/25. Obverse looks great, but the reverse is a high F low VF.

  • jayPemjayPem Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭✭✭

Easy pup for the 102... die chip under left wing.
102a is the common state, primes are scarce...
The lines in Liberty are an 1807,1808 thing 😀

  • jayPemjayPem Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have an 1807 in VF 20 that could be this coins twin... its amazing to me that large coins from over 200 years ago, worn to VF can have surfaces like this.
Never banged, scratched, gouged, dinged, corroded etc.
    Super honest commerce coin

I don't know what it's graded as, but it's absolutely gorgeous.

Very nice! I thought about this one as I drove off to work, thinking that I undershot it. It's a really attractive coin.

Not sure I see that grade from the images, but glad I was warranted in second guessing my grade.

I was thinking VF 30 but unlike Mr. Albanese, I would not want it at a grade of 35. There’s just too much wear.

As has been stated the "crosslines" are an 1807-1808 occurrence on some examples.
For example they are very prevalent on my 1807 O-113 strongly seen on both LIBERTY and EPU

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

But no one guessed the grade. https://www.pcgs.com/cert/24517561

Love this CBH -- added it to my Box-of-20.

Beautiful coin and I agree. And why it is important to understand the die characteristics when collecting this series.
Here is an example in 58 for example.

I was studying a razor sharp PCGS AU-58 O-102a today. The die state progression is neat.

Your coin I had at VF-30. First thing I noticed was a weak strike. Even some of the stars have incomplete centrils that weren't fully struck out. A touch of wear overall, no luster, had me at VF-30. Seeing the slab shot, I could see a possible 35. Great problem free coin!

I had it at 30 but thought PCGS would drop it to 25 because of the strike.

  • I was thinking a 25.
    I love these old halves.

  • HillbillyCollectorHillbillyCollector Posts: 653 ✭✭✭✭✭

Really a beautiful coin. It’s really hard to guess it, and a lot of CBHs for the actual grade because so many have weak strikes going on which looks like heavy wear!
I keep trying because I really like CBHs and want to become proficient in recognizing the grade from pics.👍

Wow... My gut was right about 35-40 but the reverse threw me off. Nice coin!

  • BillJonesBillJones Posts: 34,419 ✭✭✭✭✭

Here's coin form the same period that got an AU-53.

The OP coin would be a pass for me if they wanted VF-35 (almost EF-40) money.
