1801 DRAPED BUST DIME

    I talked to the OP on the phone this evening, and I studied his latest photos. I'm near 100% certain that it's an authentic 1801 JR-2. Check for the fine die crack that runs from right of the word OF through the stars to the back of the eagle's neck, where there is a spine. I can't see the whole crack, but the little spine is in the right place. Check the denticles - they match up. The uneven striking is consistent with coins of the period.

    I can't figure out why our hosts questioned it, though.

    1. They didn’t “question” it. They said they couldn’t say for sure yes/no. And, importantly,
    2. Another reason they will render the opinion which they did is if they cannot determine definitively if it has been plugged. If a coin has sufficient damage (environmental or otherwise) so they can’t tell if there was ever a plug, they will not render an authentic verdict.

    Buying and Selling coins for 54 years, 700+ shows in last 20 years, and boy am I tired.
