Coins that you got BACK ~ official thread ~

I have a cool story.
Back in 2017 I bought one of those Canadian $10 gold coins from that hoard.

I had it about two years, then sold it to fund another coin that I wanted.

Another two years go by and I get all three $5’s from a similar hoard in one lot, (close to gold price, too!) >:)

These:

A little time passes and I decide that I want to go ahead and find all three of the $10’s now.

It’s a six coin set

I noticed that I still had the picture of that original $10 in my phone, so, on a whim, I text the picture to my friend that I sold the coin to several years ago. (Just this past Monday) He’s a dealer, so I knew that particular coin was long gone, but maybe he had others similar….

My original coin and picture from 2017:

I wanted the same grade and holder, the 5’s match each other, so the 10’s also have to match each other…

An hour or so later, my friend texts me this picture:

I couldn’t believe it! He still had my original coin!
Normally I’d take the higher graded one, but this time I wanted the matching grade. So I got it back after all these years!

Monday’s picture:

So, what coin have you gotten back years later?

Post it and the story here!

@asheland.... Great story.... and good luck completing the set. I have not sold many coins, and I have not reacquired any that I did sell. Though I do miss my gold Britannia sets... Cheers, RickO

On two or three occasions I’ve sold a coin out into the wild, only to come across it again by complete chance and repurchase it, years or decades later.

And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

There are a couple more I wouldn't mind having back but I have these two and they make me happy. :)

Not a coin, but my grandma was giving her cow a pill and she had to force the pill down the cows throat. She noticed the ring her kids (my mom, aunts and uncles) had given her was gone and she was devastated. A year later she found it sticking out of a cow patty when she was walking in the field. Happy ending. :-)

I sold her at a weak moment. Turned out I sold more coins than I needed at the time and bought her back the following Monday.

Cool story. I don’t think I ever ended up getting any coins back after selling them.

Great story on that Canadian $10. I have the complete set of those, as well, but most of mine were purchased by me directly from the RCM when they did their liquidation in 2012-2013.

My best story of reacquisition is with a 1952-S WQ that took me about 15-years to find after I sold it. It was finally placed back in my collection through the grace and generosity of a forum member and the thread is below-

I wish I had purchased a set of those Canadian gold coins when I had the chance a few years ago! I think they are great!

If you attempted to purchase them from the RCM then at the time they released the hoard then it would have been really, really tough. Both 1912 issues ($5 and $10) were sold out in less than a day, if I recall correctly, and both of the other dates for the $5 (1913 and 1914) took only a day or two longer to sell out. Only the 1913 and 1914 $10 coins were available for a long period of time. Of course, the secondary market could have provided all the dates, but the 1912 coins were always tough to purchase.

@TomB I am seeing that lol
It looks like 1913 will be easy to locate, I’m just waiting for one that’s priced reasonably… The 1912 looks like it’s gonna be a tough cookie.

Another crazy update to this story…

In the picture, there is also a MS64 example, around the time my friend Jason had the MS 64… He did end up selling it, but I didn’t realize he sold it to the same guy, it turns out the MS64 was the one that Jason owned a few years ago as well!

After hearing the story, and also missing his old coin, Jason ended up buying the MS64 back! So both of us got our coins back!

That was literally yesterday that he got his back…
