GTG - $10 Gold Indian

Options

I just received the grade and photo of this $10 gold coin and was surprised with the grade. Wondering what everyone would think is the most accurate grade.

Since these are difficult to grade from pictures and you were surprised I’ll guess 58.

Tough call. I’m seeing possible rub on eagle’s wing? Or not? So 58. Can’t quite tell from those pictures.

Tell me what I’m missing? Other than the marks on the cheek I don’t see any other distracting dings. Those marks would keep it from a gem grade (65 or higher) but I don’t see or marks or flaws that drop the coin to a 62. If the coin has rub you drop it to AU-58 not 62.

Those are pretty bad marks on the cheek, jaw and neck. They’re not merely light abrasions or scratches, but rather, digs, that displaced a good amount of metal.

And some of you are loose. 😉 I couldn’t even contemplate a grade above 63.

Had it not been for the perceived rub on the reverse, I probably would have went 3+/4 though it has a few too many marks to look good in a 4 holder. I’m thinking the graders felt some pity putting it in a 58 holder and decided to net it to 62. I suspect cac would put it in a 58+ holder. These are going to be the coins you look out for in CACG 58+ holders if anyone even wants to sell one rather than playing arbitrage with the other tpgs.

The coin graded MS62 but I was thinking more like AU58 because of the nicks on the cheek. I am obviously pleased and this coin is priceless to me. My grandmother won this coin in an essay writing contest when she was a child.

More than enough reason to never part with the coin, it is beautiful and stirs fond memories. Enjoy!

Love the orange peel in the fields and overall very nice lustre. Despite the cheek marks would have it as a 63 & think the "2" was a bit harsh....

Wow! Congrats! I was thinking the hits on the cheek would prevent a grade that high... prime focal area. I was thinking more 62..

Beautiful coin! And priceless for the history.
I first thought 63 but the Eagle’s wing could possibly knock it into a 58 holder.
Thanks for sharing, love to see nice pieces like this!

I like the coin- initially I was thinking 63+. I do not see the hits on the portrait as being inconsistent with 63. The issue that I am unable to distinguish in the image is whether the obverse field lower quarter to the left has field hits that are significant. And in hand they may more distracting than what is seen in the image which in turn my justify a 62 instead of 63. Make no mistake about my comments- I like the coin

I don't see those marks any more distracting then the marks on these PCGS or NGC MS-64 coins. Actually I like the OP coin better because the marks are as deep or distracting IMHO.

Currently, I’m not seeing some of the pictures of the 1913 that were showing previously. And those pictures weren’t nearly as flattering to the coin as the TrueView is.

However, the 1912 looks like a 64 to me and a solid two points better than the 1913. The 1932 looks like a 63, at best, quite possibly a 62.

It looks better than a MS62 but I'm willing to bet there are hairlines on that coin that aren't visible in the pics that are quite visible when examining this coin in hand while tilting and rotating the coin under a bright lamp.

We'll agree to disagree. Those dings on the 1912 would be better described as gouges and the numerous marks on the 1932 cheek and fields are much more of a distraction than the relatively light marks on the cheek/neck of the coin in the OP.

I agree, better than a 62. It's very hard to tell what else may be on the coin when viewed in a picture. A lot can be hidden if you can't view the coin from different angles. But based on what I see it's better than a 62.

Thanks posting another image- the neck looks worse in the last image which goes along way to explain a 62 grade. Still a nice coin- but it is not as attractive as in the first image. This really helps explain the difficulty in grading accurately from images. We are grading images... not the coin
