Coin show disapointment and frustration

Russell12Russell12 Posts: 228 ✭✭✭✭

I attend a lot of coin shows, most of them are good, some not so good. If I attend a show with 30 tables and it calls itself a coin & stamp show, or coin & card show, I know what to expect. I am retired, so traveling to show is not a problem. My wife and I plan some of our trips around coin shows. The lousy ones we just won't go back to, but I have never complained about one until now. We just came back from the Colts Neck Coin Show in New Jersey. That is what they called it a "Coin Show", with "About 50 dealer tables". I am frustrated because we traveled an hour and a half each way and payed over $20.00 in tolls. There may have been "about" 50 tables with most of them full, BUT about three quarters of the show was sportcards, maybe 10 tables of coins. I talked to one of the dealers and he said a few years ago this turned into a baseball card show. I don't want to be that "get off my lawn guy", but unless you are local, don't bother with this show.

Too bad you had that experience. I’ve been to that show and sometimes you just need to check show reports to see what the show actually is. I know one show still puts out 100 dealers from its past glory even though they had 6 dealers last show

Yours is just one. Many of us have other reasons as well.

I am local to that show in Colts Neck. I haven’t gone in months because it’s mostly the same coins every month.

However some of the dealers there are very good to deal with.

That would be disappointing for me as well. No interest in ball sports... or the cards... That being said, the gun shows around here often have tables with coins... So I consider that a double win... Cheers, RickO

I tried to get a coin table at a local gun show and was unsuccessful. I guess they can sell out their space to more “acceptable “ merchants.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

My local show went the same way, last time I went there were as many stamp dealers and sellers of misc junk as coin people

If you close to North Jersey, come to the Parsippany show on the first Sunday of the month. 90+ dealers and all coins.

I am planning on attending the Parsippany show, it's near where I used to live, now I'm 2 hours away.I wish shows like this had a central website to send my most wanted coins to and have dealers check it, so they can bring them

I feel your pain. I went to a Coin and Collectibles show (something like that) close to Gainesville, FL some months back and it was everything but coins. There was one guy with some coins and they were not for me. I drove over 90 minutes, walked the show for about 5 minutes and then drove home. The show was listed on CoinShows-USA.com so it really annoyed me. You don't know until you try I guess...or I just might make it a practice of contacting the organizer of the show in advance if it is a show I have not attended before, especially if it is a long drive. Detroit area has plenty of coin shows... almost any weekend. Shows are 90%+ coins. I do see many of the same coins from week to week from dealers that lay their coins out at full retail. They must not mind packing up the same coins and displaying them again a week later.

I suppose part of the reason our shows are almost strictly coins is that we have as many card shows in the area for those sellers to attend. I actually follow both hobbies.

Sorry you were disappointed. Hopefully you and the wife got to enjoy the trip regardless.

I drove to a show once only to find out it had been cancelled due to lack of dealers renting a table.

The only show within intra-day driving distance for me is the Dalton, GA regional show. It's within two hours. I doubt I would find anything I want to buy but will eventually go there to check it out.

That's actually pretty funny. I'm a student at the University of Florida and I happened to finally decide to go to the one coin shop in Gainesville and I went on the day of the show. Unfortunately I was not able to go as I did not have enough time. Was it really that bad? I was told it was a decently sized show.

I too went to UF but it was 3 decades ago. Lol. One of my professors there is actually active on the forums. As far as size, sure, it was fine. There was only a single table that had any coins, mostly 2x2s. I was literally there for 5 minutes and then drove home.

I feel your pain but even looking for a few minutes for coins and finding none is at least getting out of the house and doing something.

I've looked for coins at gun shows in the past but stopped due to the atmosphere. I'd rather look elsewhere before I go to another one.

Many years ago, Tom Lacey, who died about 20 years ago, ran coin shows in Massachusetts and some other New England states. He had a strict rule that dealers could not sell sports cards at his shows. His concern, which seems to be borne out here, is that they would come to dominate the show.

What really matters is not how many tables are at a show but what the dealers bring to the show. I acquired the one of the better preserved 1802 half cents at a local show. I have known other collectors who have found similar gems at smaller venues. Yes, some local shows are a waste of time and gas money but not all of them.

Unpopular opinion: I hate when I go to a coin show and even 25% of the tables are bullion dealers.

Agree Bill. I see the same coins at many of the smaller local shows. Dealers drag out the same displays and ask full prices with little or no willingness to come to a real deal. They rinse and repeat at the next venue. That being said, evry once in a while I don't go home empty handed because something new will eventually show up. Also a good way to spend an hour or two on a Sunday morning and when the weather cooperates it's also a chance to take the Vette for a sunny drive.

I remember Tom, he used to run a show at an Elks Club in Milford, CT that was very well attended in the 1990s. That location is now part of an auto mall.

I happened to drive by a monthly show in New Haven a few months ago, the sign at the curb said "Stamp & Coin Show" but once inside, it was eight tables of stamp dealers, one of whom had a few binders of common coins. They told me "the other coin guy" was on vacation that month.

The long Beach show has now expanded to have two asles full of card dealers, and it's the centers biggest room.
Longer lines for card grading submittal than the coin submission line.

Think how many Registry sets there are now locking great coins up in strong /long time hands. Plus how many dealers with inventories o f 1 million dollars. Coins as a product to sell are in very short supply, but cards have had and still have many producers/ manufacturers printing unlimited varieties of cards to feed an ever growing demand.
    Lots of product availability.
    For dealers.

He was my professor also, Eco 2 (microeconomics)
One of these days I hope to make it to a FUN show.

The only show within intra-day driving distance for me is the Dalton, GA regional show. It's within two hours. I doubt I would find anything I want to buy but will eventually go there to check it out.

The GNA show in Dalton is a decent show, and so is the Blueridge show held there I believe in August. Not sure what you collect but I’ve had good luck at both these shows, and hope you do as well

I'm majoring in Economics and what's funny is I've taken both Principles and Intermediate Micro. I'm assuming Eco 2 is the Intermediate course. In that case I have most likely had this professor for an Economics course and didn't even know they also were into numismatics. I don't think there are that many professors off the top of my head who have been there for over 30 years, so I have some ideas of who they might be.

Drove to a show in Vegas (From San Diego) years ago. I think it might have been at the Luxor. Ended up it was a mixed coin and car show with only a single coin dealer, at least when I arrived, with a couple cases of coins. Nothing of any interest. I sold them a couple slabbed low MS 1894 Morgans and went to look at the cars.

I attend a lot of coin shows.

I've never been to a coin show, but sounds like fun. Is there a coin show listing somewhere? I would need to really plan it out. Thanks @1630Boston for the heads up on Bay State Coin Show....if I can free up a Friday/Saturday..probably unlikely...that is peak tourist season here :/
Is that an annual show or will there be another show in the Fall?

I am frustrated because we traveled an hour and a half each way and payed over $20.00 in tolls.

That would be super frustrating for me coming from an Island, I would have to pay ferry charges and probably have to stay overnight in a hotel. If there were more tables of cards than coins...I'd be very angry.
