finally found a wholesome seated dollar

P0CKETCHANGEP0CKETCHANGE Posts: 3,081 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've been looking for a type example for about 6 months, after selling another SLD that I liked, but didn't love. So many of the coins in this series look scrubbed or messed with, even if they're straight graded.

This 1870 presented itself at a GC auction recently, and it checked all my boxes—great original-looking eye appeal, a thick skin, some character/color, generally uniform surfaces, and no problems. It arrived this week and I'm very pleased.

The coin I sold was a 58, but this is a happy downgrade to this 50 (my minimum grade for my type set). Any and all comments welcome, even if you don't like it as much as I do.

    Super nice.
They are definitely scarce/rare with that "look".

I like it. It appears to flash a bit of PL surfaces at certain angles. Is that the case in-hand? Regardless of if it does or not, I think the coin is attractive.

For "pocketchange", that must have been an incredible find. ;)

She’s got pretty thick skin but under bright light, yes. There’s a tinge of mint luster left around the letters and stars as well.

I really like the look. And it’s not an 1871!

Wow, the TrueView makes it look so much better. I'm guessing GC didn't use the TV or you might have had a lot more competition. Even your bottom two iPhone shots bring out the positives better than the GC photo.

  • Very nice SLD! I’ve been struggling to find (and getting the winning bid) on the two I need for my Dansco7070.

By any chance you have a link your type set? I’d be really interested to see what else you have!

Sure, it’s posted publicly—here’s the link.

It was 100% complete at one point, but I’ve sold a few examples off that need to be replaced, which was the case for this SLD.
