Just won in a Heritage auction. Guess the grade, if you're so inclined.

This will be the first Classic Head I've owned that wasn't dated 1834.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

    I won't hazard a guess at the grade as I'm pretty much clueless to the series. I can say the coin has a magnificent eye appeal though. Nice job LM.

    I believe this now completes my basic type set of post-1834 gold. I have all the basic designs now from dollar through double-eagle, with all denominations covered. What I do not have completely represented are the subtypes like Motto/No Motto, etc.

    For the record, I’d have guessed VF30 if I didn’t know the grade. Not saying that’s the actual PCGS grade here. Just the way I’d have seen it. But for whatever reason, I have found (in my limited experience) that the TPGs tend to grade these more liberally than I’d expect, a lot of the time.

    Yes, that is what I would grade it (based on the images).
    But no, I don't expect it to have been assigned that grade by anybody else.

    Not quite. PCGS does assign plus grades. 40+ would be between 40 and 45.

    I will say this one does not have a plus grade on the label.

    You can be forgiven for that- plus grades are not terribly common, at least not in this grade range. I don’t have any.

    XF40 is the grade I would give it. Very attractive coin. During this era, the $5 was the highest denomination coin produced by the US Mint. The mint stopped producing the $10 gold coin many years earlier in 1804 and the $20 wouldn't come along until 1850 after gold was discovered in California resulting in the gold rush which some historians claim to be the greatest peacetime migration of people. It's neat to think that the Alamo fell this year during the war for Texas independence. Very cool and historic coin. B)
