The Morgan looks like it offers genuine toning over its surfaces. ANACS agrees.
Even then, the owner/seller states he believes otherwise.
What an interesting turn on what usually takes place on eBay!

Interesting how the color is by the distortion of the slab.
Maybe the now owner did some experimenting after it was slabbed.
Either way can't say I like the look.

The toning looks fine to me.
I'm thinking the seller might just want to cover all the bases-maybe he has had a return before in a similar situation and the cracked slab could make some people think that was done to create the toning (even though it's more likely just a cracked case from someone dropping or scratching it).

Yeah that’s a good looking coin.
To me, It looks like it toned in a Kraft 2"X2' manila envelope. And the high points didn't tone much because the sulfur infused air couldn't circulate as readily over those areas.
I have seen similar from Tidy House promotions or older PCI slab.
I have also seen PCGS and NGC slabs they determined were not natural sell for BIG BUCKS.
I like it.
I think that the toning is natural, but I would not pay a premium for it.
The honesty is refreshing.
Its the yellow label of the slab that makes it look ugly to some , I just hate those yellow slabs.
Pretty coin! Hard to imagine AT with the white areas of both sides of the coin.
How would you keep the chemical/ process off those areas?

The"chemical process" for AT is the same as NT, just faster. How would it naturally tone with the white areas? (Rhetorical question.)

Why did you click on “LOL” in response to a couple of us who like the appearance of the coin? Did you actually think it was funny? I don’t recall anyone laughing at you when you spoke highly about altered coins, etc.

I certainly did not press the LOL button to be abrasive. I don't think it's a big deal either.
If we were looking at this coin together in person and it was laid out in front of us and I saw it and say Yuck and you said "I like it" I would probably chuckle or laugh. It's a difference of opinion and certainly not something I should be singled out for Mark. It's not disrespectful to disagree with the appearance of a toned coin. I removed the LOL that I pressed out of respect for you. I meant nothing serious by it.
The LOL carries with it ..... a hint of ridicule within certain context. Just like capital letters infer shouting.
Regardless, to each their own. I find the coin somewhat attractive, though not one I will spend premiums on.
Thank you for taking the time to explain your thinking and no need to remove your “LOL”. After hearing your reasoning, it makes sense to me and doesn’t seem at all disrespectful. It’s a very good example, of the potential difficulty/wrong impression from reading words or viewing emojis, without hearing a person’s voice or seeing their facial expressions.

I do like the toning overall and I do like the reverse, but having a white cheek like that just seems odd to me. If not for the obverse I'd like it more.
Perhaps they tried to flip to pcgs or ngc and they said AT/DNC. Or perhaps he sees something in hand he thinks ANACS overlooked making it seem AT to him.
To whit... Never seen someone suggest AT on something a professional grader thinks is NT.

Not evenly toned. Perhaps handled, more likely partially wiped purposely or not.
Not choice eye appeal IMO.
Maybe the seller knows something you and I don't. I know for a fact that there are doctored coins in every major TPG holder with a straight grade. Not that I'm claiming this is doctored, but...

Just a theory of mine and I think it will always remain a theory.
The grease used in the minting process may be leaving a micro film coating somewhere (over or under) on the coin.
The grease can only be fully removed by a special press solvent, which much never be used in this fashion.
This causes what could be described as an oil slick in water, but a dry version.

Looks NT to me as well but I'm not a fan of the toning breaks around Ms. Liberty's cheek and on the Eagle's breast... 1880-S isn't a difficult date to find nice so I'd likely pass on this one.
