So I hit one of my banks this morning. I was standing in line. There was a guy turning in $250 worth of rolled halves at one of the teller windows in front of me. I was of course watching and listening. A teller window came available and I was standing next to this guy. I asked my teller if I could have the rolls of half dollar, this guy just turned in. He overheard my conversation and turned to look at me. (I think CRH'ers can pick each other out a mile away)

He grinned and smiled. He said; you're not going to find anything in there. I said; what do you meant? He said; there's no silver in those rolls! I grinned and smiled back. I said; okay, thanks. My teller asked me if I still wanted them. I said; yes ma'am I do.

The moral of the story. There are coin roll hunters and them there are coin roll hunters!

Pictures to follow shortly.

    Thanks gents!

One thing is odd. I check several times. Unless I'm missing it or looking in the wrong place (and I probably am), I don't see one of these listed in PCGS, NGC or ANACS. I do see where variety vista has attributed them. I need a reality check.

For many series, PCGS only attributes varieties that are listed in the Cherrypicker's Guide, and the 1972-D DDO is not listed in the current CPG.

NGC often attributes varieties that are not in CPG, but this particular one is not on their list.

I believe ANACS will attribute any variety listed on VarietyVista. The 1972-D DDO is not currently listed on their population report, but that may just be because no one has sent any in for attribution.

If you paid PCGS for their variety service, they would label it as a "minor variety " with the designation of "doubled die obverse", but would not name the specific variety number. Off hand, I don't know what NGC would do, but perhaps someone who does know will chime in.

If this is not listed in NGC's variety plus section they will not attribute it or put any info on the label. ANACS is the best bet for this type of thing.

    Congrats 👏
    That is a winner!
I too, have sort of the same situation in a Jeff nickel, though.
I sent my coin in to PCGS, hoping to have the key dd. A proof 1956dd, only to come back as the "minor" one instead. No number, just the title, minor variety.
    I'll post later.

This coin is not a DDO.

There are no 72-D DDO's listed in the PCGS pop report.

If it appeared in mint sets MS-65 would be "common" and MS-66 would probably be pop top.

Half dollars are perhaps the most common clad rolls from the '70's but they are still quite difficult to find and quality is typically poor. It's a wonder any varieties are found in BU that don't appear in mint sets much less high grades.

I'm wondering if the new CPG edition will be listing this 72-D DDO with an FS number? Or if there's a way to find out before the book hits the streets?

Wexler show 2 varieties. This coin it is as the WDDO-001, less accentuate but interesting on the E in WE. I have a clear one in 65 ANACS, but personally I think are much more variants from this. For me it is very surprising that this denomination it is almost ignored. And they are many, many DDO's or DDR's.

The 1972-D DDO show in function of the Die stage different levels. A clear one mean we have all the characteristics of this DDO. This coin here it is the DDO with other Die stage I have and studied with Wex. Larry can say more about but I do not know if it is here. Mentor Bill also.

what I say: it is that those coins has many, many DDO's and DDR's uncatalogued. This it is the word of the varieties.

Sorry. It is a real punch in the gut when you think you have made a big discovery only to discover it seems everbody else knows something you don't. My turn was about 40 years ago with a little thing called "Longacre doubling". Good of you to share a defeat. Many only admit to great wins. James

It's been a couple of years. Sorry for the delay. It wasn't worth the wait! 🤬 😤 😣

    ANACS explanation:

Master Die Doubling. Affects too many dies to list. The Wexler page referenced in your submission also illustrates series doubling for most of 1971 and all of 1972. That is what is present on your coin. It is not WDDO-001 or CONECA DDO-001. The die markers for this variety are not present on your coin. Every 1972-D displays similar doubling to what is present on this coin.

Bummer, but it's really nice that ANACS included a detailed explanation.

When I started coin roll searching many years ago, I found a Lincoln I was sure was a major die clash. Turned out to be a thin layer of super glue from two cents previous stuck together. I still laugh about that over a decade later.
