A real 3-legger or not?

Part of the ugliest group of Buffalos I've ever bid on. But up in the corrner of the group photo, out of focus and poorly lit, I saw this reverse. For less than $5, I took a chance. Usually I can pick out the fakes when someone else asks the question, but this one has me wondering. Eroded rear leg and roughness on Indian's neck says yes, but scratches where leg should be say otherwise.

    The scratches are not isolated to the area of the leg, they are all over. Looks like some counter wheel damage also. I've never owned a 3-legger so I'm not really knowledgeable here. But I think if has a chance.

    Congrats. I was skeptical, but some very informative posts followed the initial collective apprehension.

    Great hole filler for a lower grade set. Nice pick up and good eye.

    It is a genuine 3 leg Buffalo nickel, just circulation damage.
    All you need to to is look at the neck on the obverse if in doubt.

    Yes it has both neck attributes, back of neck and lower throat front of neck. Good pickup, I didn't go there as I was sure from reverse diagnostics.

    I would have probably passed thinking it was messed with, especially with the wheel marks near "five cents". Now, judging from the comments, I'd say you cherry picked a winner. Nice job.

    The one I always look for is pitting or roughness on the Indian's neck.

    I think that it is a three legged die state, but it got enough damage to make it a “details grade” coin if it were to be certified. It also has damage in an unfortunate place, around the missing leg, which would make it hard to call it anything but a filler.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
