Your opinion: Should this large cent be slabbed?

I know sometimes PCGS will return a coin in a bodybag for various reasons.
I would think this slabbed cent would qualify for that exemption.
Your thoughts?

    No, but if they went this far with it, the owner may as well have had them dip it.

    They used to body bag such things in the past. In the current Era, most genuine coins end up in details holders instead.

    Many coins like that should never have been sent in, waste of money. I'm not sure what other folks minimum value is to send coins in, but has to be at least $100 I would think. We have free choice though.

    Most likely a metal detector find. Clean it up as best you can and enjoy it. No reason I can see to slab it. But it's your money.

    Details look sharper than XF. Was probably an UNC coin before the extensive environmental damage

    Whoever submitted this coin for slabbing should have also paid for the PCGS conservation service. ;)

    That coin might be improved with conservation... or not - the surface could be severely pitted. Hard to say from pictures. In that state, I would not have submitted it.... Cheers, RickO

    I was joking about conservation. That's why I used a winky emoji. There's no way any conservation service would attempt to improve that coin. It's too far gone.

    No, unless it's some sort of extremely rare Newcomb variety which needs to confirmed for marketing purposes.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    lol... yeah, if they're going as far as to get TVs on it, they may as well have gone all the way and spent as much money as possible.

    No, unless this coin is some rare variety, it should be raw and in a bargain box at $10...

    the submitter checked or left blank part 4 of the submission that says

    HOLDER COINS WITH GENUINE DETAILS GRADES

    they would only return in flip if not sure if genuine or PVC

    Might as well. They're already buried from the grading fees so...in for a penny, in for a pound. B)

    Edit to add that I agree with @Walkerguy21D ... stuff like this slows down sub times for everyone else.

    Maybe it was dug at a Civil War battlefield, or found in someone's ancestor's back yard, or was someone's first metal detector find. We (here on the forum) will likely never know.

    I have a couple coins that have historical value (in one case, just to me) that I will slab at some point. That's the best way, in conjunction with documentation, to preserve the provenance and history.

    I worded the question incorrectly.
    My concern wasn't whether the submitter should have sent the coin in for grading yet rather
    should PCGS have slabbed it (with active PVC and corrosion) on their end?
