My toning experiment - 27 years in

BoloBolo Posts: 131 ✭✭✭✭

In 1996, I took a silver Eagle, put it in a flip, then put it in a drawer to see what happens to it naturally. Took it out to look at it today and I think it has been improved!

Nice hint of golden brown toning around the rim, especially in the right light. In comparison, all my silver coins in 2x2s or slabbed haven't changed at all. Wonder what it will look like at the 50 year mark?

We’re going to need to start attaching surveillance systems and monitors to coins to keep people like you from artificially toning things. It’s the only way!

27 Years? Wow! That's dedication. I have a few T2's that toned like that in 2 years and they were stored like all my other bullion. Only the T2's started to tone.

Rim toning is really the only toning that I think is truly attractive in most cases, although I do like pastel rainbow colors in some cases, and blue/purple toning on early copper. I think 27 years would be considered natural no matter your declared intent. lol At any rate, I think it looks nice.

I had another one I left out on a shelf without any holder at all but the dust made it tone all speckly and ugly, so that one got sold. I pull this one out every few years to see what has happened to it. I know you can get some interesting toning from albums and such, but I wanted to see what happened if you just didn't mess with it at all - left in the flip I got it in.

It was free, so why not? Its fun!

I've noticed a lot of you guys have cats. Have any of you tried putting some silver coins in the cat's litter box to see if the coins tone? I know---dumb idea. :/

Wow! I can't even imagine just casually waiting 27 YEARS.... :o

That being said, it doesn't look like it has toned very much, at all.

I see a VERY subtle hue along the rims.

And I’m the idiot that bought an estate around 2005, where the owner had put all the earlier release Eagles in paper envelopes where they toned outrageously….and thought ugh, I need to dip these!

I've done this as well. I had a blast white Proof 1964 dime turn wonderful colors in a few months, but everything else was the same blast white. I was confused to say the least.

You sound like a lawyer. If it's "intent" then it's AT. If not then it's NT. I you cannot tell from the photo then you really don't know.

Not a long term toning experiment but more a 'got it and forgot it' example. Littleton had some special back in 2001 where you got 4 or 5 eagles for like $15 if you went on their mailing list. Kept 1 and sold the rest when silver hit high $20. Been in the same holder for 22 years. Got the other at the Colts Neck/Holmdel NJ coin show around the same time and this was the holder it was in. Think I paid $5. Slow rim toning. Guess it's NT, but nothing special? Real NT takes time without exposure to some induced element or condition.

    Well put.

That’s exactly what I am saying. How do the graders know? With out a back story I’m very sorry but it’s intent. Jzyskowski not attorney at law. Just have an enquiring mind. Thanks.

AT vs. NT is a judgement call without specific evidence. Some are obvious due to methods employed... And some obvious ones even get slabbed... Tarnish is tarnish, the environmental damage incurred on metals due to environmental conditions (temperature, chemicals, humidity). The 'purists' want it to happen without intent (natural)... I do not want it to happen at all... That being said, if I did want it, I would do it myself, rather than pay an exorbitant fee for a damaged coin. Cheers, RickO

I have some from when I first started collecting that are jet black (I didn’t treat them as a numismatic item…strictly bullion). They were just thrown in plastic notecard boxes loose and put up on a shelf.

The chemistry of tarnished silver over time is the same no matter what. ricko is spot on. It's a matter of eye appeal. I believe there is no such thing as AT or NT. It's all the same. The market of eye appeal determines the difference between the two and thus the value of the "toned" coin.

No one yet has brought up the issue of album toning. I have an 1859 0 Seated $ that has classic Wayte Raymond album toning; a bit like the toning above, but on steriods.
