That's a pretty heavy rim ding at E in States. Some pitting just right of the shield. Scrape at 6 o'clock on the reverse. Old NGC holder I am guessing makes it NGC AU50. I always liked the placement of the O mintmark on these trimes.

Nice trime, LM. I always found the mintmark hard to notice, as it was so big it appeared to be lettering.

I'm in AU50 camp.
It looks like the dies were rusted, causing lumps on the coin near the shield. I see pitting near STATES OF, as well as light corrosion on the rims and elsewhere.
If rim allows straight grade, AU55
AU 53, it’s a popular coin and the minor issues are magnified due to the blown up images.

Caveat emptor... I suck at grading these things... my first impression was AU55 due to the rim, but it wouldn't shock me to see it in an MS holder...

AU53 if the rim issues at 12' obv/ 6'rev don't details it.
I might need to add a 51-O to my want list.
My initial thought was XF-40. I can see it being higher than that after second look. I do like that this was the only mintmarked trime. Such an oddity in the run and a nice semi-key date to go hunting for.

I've never tried to grade these, but my first thought was 50.
I collect world proof sets, coins featuring composers, mid-20th century U.S. proof coins, U.S. type coins, and whatever else I want.

NIce! XF45?
XF40 - has wear on two points of the obverse shield (K7 and K10). Reverse is a skosh better - only the diamond has wear. The low relief orbs are weak strike not wear.

Grade doesn't matter, i'd buy it even if it's in a details holder, just because it looks so dang cool.
Problem with trimes, in hand, they look like a thumbtack to the naked eye.

What people are calling a "rim ding" on the obverse at 12:00 and a "scrape" on the reverse rim at 6:00 might actually be neither. It could be a small planchet flaw that affects both sides at same location.
The coin just arrived and is nicer in hand. There's a trace of luster not seen in the photos. I'd almost call it "semi-prooflike", though that is perhaps a stretch. It is also whiter in hand than seen in the large photos above.

It's not a clip, but it is possible that the scrapes on the obverse were on the planchet before it was struck. The rim is pretty soft in general, but particularly opposite that mark.

They are the toughest coins to grade.
I always liked this date and mm 3 cent silver. Congrats! Great purchase especially in AU 58! AU 58 coins are very easy to sell!
Maybe not so much, if you overpaid for them like I did on this and other recent purchases. But over time…

I didn't say "easy profit". I said "easy sell". Overpay? Even if you overpaid at least you have it, will be happy with it and enjoy it. To me the enjoyment trumps out the overpayment. I overpay for lots of things, especially if I have been searching for a long time for just the right coin.
