1969-S Nickel Proof - Why the difference in two coins?

I was going through a few old albums that I had in the closet and happened to notice the difference in detail in two 1969-S Proof coins. The difference is drastic. Is it because one of these might be out of a "Special Mint Set"?

Maybe die fatigue or polishing. There used to be much more variation than in the more modern period.

One appears to be a 1969 the other a 1996
That could explain the difference.

Modern proofs have much stronger frost than older proofs.
I looked again and you're right, a '69 and a '96 DOH! Apparently I got hosed when I bought that because the holder is marked '69.
That being said, it's still a remarkable difference in detail.

Yep... Different years...but a lot of difference in the two coins. Always look closely at purchases.

Between 1969 and 1996 the Mint probably re-worked the Jefferson Nickel design at least 5-10 times.
