    no photo yet. i recently read about francis henning. the article said the 1939 nickel was only minted WITH a mint mark. yet the the listings of every year show one was minted without. which is true. have a 39 with no mint mark on my desk.

    There are alot of fakes of the henning nickel. You will need pics and someone here to look them over to determine if its a true fake or a faked fake.

    A normal nickel of the time will weigh 5 grams, but Henning Nickels weigh 5.4 grams. So I guess the best way to tell is to weigh it, if you have gram scale.

    As to the mint mark - that only applies to war time nickels. (1942-1945)

    @neiltor ... According to the MegaRedbook, 7th Edition, there were 120,615,000 minted without a mint mark. Cheers, RickO

    Regular Philadelphia coins also lack a mint mark. It's absence means nothing.

    I think/hope you misread the article as that information is incorrect.

    Genuine 1944 nickels all had a mintmark (large size, above Monticello). Henning 1944 counterfeits have no mintmark.

    Genuine 1939 nickels come with or without mintmarks (small, to the right of Monticello). Henning 1939 nickels do not have any mintmarks.

    like to show a close up photo of a 1939 nickel however my phone will not focus that close. how do you guys do that? it weighs only 4.17 grams

    If you are worried about focusing in on the lack of a mintmark, I'm sorry to say you've got a normal nickel. No picture needed, the Henning Counterfeit will weigh more, not less. As has been stated, all 1939 nickels from Philadelphia are struck like this.

    I switch to manual mode on my phone cam or the flower closeup mode. You might need to tweak some settings in those modes to get good focus.

    When using your camera and the coin is shown in the center of your screen, touch where the coin shows on the screen and it should focus to that depth

    Then it's not a Henning. One of the diagnostics of a Henning nickel is that it's overweight. I think 5.5 grams is the number. Definitely well over the normal 5 grams.

    I know. The OP's 1939 Jefferson nickel has a much better chance of being a DDR then being a Henning.

    Henning nickels were indeed struck to appear circulated, but that doesn't mean that they're aren't any uncirculated examples. This is because Henning copied a circulated Jefferson to prepare the die itself, and the result was VF-ish looking coins. But the coins weren't messed with after the fact, so they can be thought of as Uncirculated. Just hard to differentiate between them.
