Impulse Buy- Thoughts- Good or Bad, etc.

Okay, I’m sure we all have been here before or currently, maybe?😂
Four or five years ago, I was sitting around one rainy weekend, watching an auction and ran into this coin at the last minute. I liked it’s looks and suddenly thought 1812, the “War of 1812.” So I bought it!
Never bought one in this series before or since. I ran into it a day or two ago and still like it. Thought I would run it by some of you with much more experience than myself.
Thoughts, did I do okay on an impulse?
Maybe I should have skipped that auction, etc?

Sure, I will, give me your thoughts first? NO, I didn’t look it up. No time and it wasn’t that big of a deal, I didn’t think I would lose much or make much, either way. I just liked it.
There were a handful of coins before, and it didn’t seem too expensive, and I liked it. In this case, grade, etc., didn’t become a big deal.

XF and looks to be a nice coin. Are the images muting it somewhat? Something about those pics make me think the coin may look a bit more lively in hand. 1812 CHB's are fun.

For reference, here's an 1812 that our host pegged as VF.

Look like a nice O-103. Look at the diagonal lines underneath the eagles lower jaw. I’d say it’s a nice 50 from the pics.

Other easy pickup points are the two dots under the I in AMERICA, a single dot below the U in UNITED and yours has the die crack through 50 C. to the top of the U.

Thoughts, did I do okay on an impulse?

I'd imagine that at least some of the response to that question will be determined by what grade and holder the coin is in as well as what you paid. After all, if you paid a few hundred that is one thing, but if you paid a few thousand that is something entirely different.

To everyone saying EF, sell me all your 1812 EF's that look like that! Please!!

As @Pnies20 said, it's an O-103, and a nice looking one at that. The weakness on the stars to the right, and somewhat across the hair and curls is strike related, not altogether uncommon for this Die Marriage.

Grade is probably AU53 (50 as a minimum), in my opinion. Enough luster to warrant that, at least. Very little wear overall so it could have got a 55.

Looks to have quite a bit of luster and no distracting marks. It is a really nice coin!

I was in line with @pursuitofliberty regarding the grade. Low range AU-50 but potential 55. I think the pics conceal the luster which may appear like a lower grade.

For an impulse buy, I think you got a little lucky with this one!

Very nice! As for worth it if you like the coin, then it was worth it. Whether we or anyone else agrees is irrelevant (aside from when you go to sell, if/when that happens).

I don't think you did bad for the grade and accessory, although 4 or 5 years ago might have been a little strong. The point is it's a solid coin, and you can rarely go wrong owning solid coins.

I somewhat question the 58 grade, but not too much. After I made my comment, I almost edited it thinking, "It very well could be a 55, and it has the right look to bean".

    Nice example!

    That's a keeper!
High AU grading is whimsical at times, and as always the best looking coins in a certain grade will sell for far more than merely nice ones...with sticker or not.
Here's one that was always fun to look at when I had it.
In hand I'd swear it looked unc..
Bought as N58, got it stickered., sent to pcgs... 55

I think you bought a historic, high quality, original coin. It doesn’t really matter if you overpaid by a few dollars - and I don’t know if you did or not given the market at the time. If you choose to sell today, I think you’d likely get your money out of it. Hopefully you are really enjoying the coin and have no plans to sell!

    Congrats!

He chose 50, 53, and 55 on the grade in that single post and still missed what pcgs assigned it. I’m no expert with this series, but how can he claim to be better than people guessing xf45? If this coin is lock for a grade, why is there so much room for interpretation on that? Maybe pcgs got it wrong.

Trying to remain objective, my guess probably would have been in the 50-53 range, but I've been going through some of the CoinFacts examples and several of them in AU grades are the O-103. Im not a CBH collector but it appears that one of the characteristics of this variety is a weak strike on the right side, the stars are all flat with no definition, and theres quite a bit of weakness in the hair curls that can be mistaken for wear. Regardless, its a gorgeous coin no matter what holder its in!

Okay, Boys and Girls, the reason I liked this coin so much was the original look, that at least I thought it had. I thought to myself kinda a “gun barrel worn grey.” I agree with all, the grade seems high, as I would normally expect more luster for the grade, in my series. But I did have a little insurance.

Assuming it is straight graded you did not need a picture of the lettered edge to be sure that was not rolled (damaged). I cannot assess how you did without the purchase price.

Probably high, thus the impulse buy. I am working on this and would probably not make that buy today, at least not without more details of the series. Really wanted to share the story and see what you all thought of the coin.

$1440 for an 1812 AU58 with CAC is an outstanding deal. PCGS price guide is $2750.

Room for interpretation most likely has to do with two things, early dates in this series suffered mightily at the mint to obtain decent strikes and Heritage pics...

Yeah, couldn’t figure that one either. Legend sold a P58+CAC in December for $3,400 and change. Clearly PCGS is more accurate on their Price #’s than CAC(in this case.)
Maybe CAC doesn’t update as often, really don’t know.
