There is a die clash and some scuffing on the holder. Die polish lines galore.

Since it is not the coin I remember, I'll guess. It does compare favorably to a PL example I had in an old no line fatty (undesignated obviously) in a 64 holder. I'll guess MS64.

I’ll guess MS (edited to 63).

The toning echoes the tone of "Silent Night" if that makes sense, like looking out at a nighttime snowfall just before going to sleep.

I think this is more likely an MS coin that spent time in an old paper envelope. It should have flashy, almost prooflike luster. I'm not sure what grade I'd guess on it, but I suspect the coin is AU-58 or MS-62.

@The_Dinosaur_Man It does have proof like luster. Its a very tough coin to photograph especially in the holder.

Whatever the grade, I really like the look of this one. The reverse looks fully proof like, and I believe it’s a business strike. MS64.

Here's a different angle that captures some of how it looks. None of the photos actually look as nice as the coin does.

Despite the number of “Proof” guesses, based on the strike, die-clashing and what look to be obverse die-cracks, I can’t see the coin as a Proof.

Looks better in the subsequent pictures than the OP. So I will upgrade to MS63. Cheers, RickO

@ricko the second set of pics you can't see the die polish is probably why. I can see clash marks in the second set. None of these pics compare to how nice the coin really looks. Mirrored fields. Sharp detail and nice blue toning.

@ricko yes this being so small, so shiny, and in the slab makes it very tough. A member here actually took those first photos. Way better than I could do.

Maybe it's just me but I see a die clashed coin with breaks on the obverse... I'll go MS64...

@lkenefic yes die clashed obv and rev with lots of die polish as well. Probably to try and get rid of the clashes.

I don't doubt it one bit. Even with the best pictures I can produce after 6 months of practice and trial and error often still can't truly express the beauty of the coin in hand. Capturing what a coin looks like in hand is truly a talent for those that can.

A couple more pics. I will wait for a few more guesses. Still no correct guesses. Took these in a dark room otherwise you would only get glare.

Can we play higher or lower? 😅

Since I'd be surprised it would be below 58, and no one has guessed, I'll go 66 for the giggles. Since you seem to be wanting to show off the shiny surfaces I'll go with pr.

@spyglassdesign OK so its not an AU coin and its also not a proof. It is super "shiny". Both obv and rev have mirrored fields.

I see. Then I'll go with ms66 then (if we are using whole numbers only, ie no stars or plusses.

@spyglassdesign There were no pluses or stars way back when this was graded. I've owned this for about 30 years.

Ok I can't stand waiting much longer. This coin in my opinion should be graded a 64 PL. It will get cracked and submitted some day.

wow... didn't see that one coming! I wonder if the die polish lines were interpreted as contact marks?? Nice coin...

@lkenefic Yes I think they were misinterpreted. Definitely a much better coin than the grade. Looks proof when holding the slab in your hand.

I think 1870 is one of the more attractively struck dates in the series, but that strike is particularly good. Some softness is usually seen in the shield or the left side of the wreath.

61... The one or two grades I think no one guessed between ms65 and au58? Sheesh.

Nice looking coin. I'm sure it looks great in hand!

I have to admit how I arrived at MS64... I didnt say proof because of the die clashing and what looked like efforts (die polishing) to remove the clash marks. I didnt think this would be the case for a Proof issue. MS63 was already guessed by several members but it was not correct... so, I didn't go lower than 63 because I thought there's no way it grades lower than that... so I went a point higher. Very nice piece... Congrats!
