Looks like it was recovered in Death Valley 😬

I have no idea but it looks to have been exposed to some extreme elements possibly.

    Probably heat damage.

I wonder if it's an old lacquer job?

Is it silver or some other metal?

Could it be from a shattered coin mold used for making counterfeits?

Someone here knows. It's only a matter of time before they chime in.

I surely don't know, but my best guess is that it was struck on a defective planchet.

If a mold or die was shatterered the lines would be raised on the coin. ;)

The lines would need to be raised.

imo, i think most of all the lines are just staining despite looking like they are etched.

i'd say 98% if it were dipped, they'd go away.

i know we've seen this effect posted on coins a few times (that i've seen) here. fwiw

i would go to 100% but the image pixelates too much upon zooming.

whatever it is and caused it, it isn't a desirable mint error/variation. although probably has been in the ground and/or some undesirable compound.

if you all want to see something EXTREMELY rare and VERY aesthetically interesting, look up that "good for one scent" cwt that was posted again recently (as a ground find i believe) that looks like all the moisture and color has been sucked right out of it and is crumbling. what a doozy!!!!
