$105 for these two, how'd I do?!

KurisuKurisu Posts: 1,912 ✭✭✭✭✭

Went to a local LCS yesterday to pick up an order. "A coin shop" in Littleton, CO...Paul and his adorable doggo run the store. He told me he was heading to the Florida show too for those of you going. He's incredibly sweet and fair...just like so many of you

My Morgan and Peace dollars are not any type of sets...just coins I liked over the years, as is much of my collection.
I only know a couple of VAMs and haven't checked to see if this Morgan is one.

I thought the same thing at first, but went to look at the price guides and I was surprised that it’s actually a fair price.

I guess slabbed certified unc silver dollars are rarely under 50$ anymore, but it does seem like the pcgs price guide values are optimistic, considering that the 1923 peace has 100k graded in 63, and 50k for the 21 Morgan, not to mention the amount of ungraded examples in albums or rolls.

Hate to say this but 1921 "morgan" appears to be one of the new fake slabs coming out of china... PCGS does NOT label morgans "morgan"... Honestly hope i'm wrong...

I think you might be mistaken about that. All these eBay listings say "Morgan" on the label.

Don't think so... These are ALL fakes with the morgan label... they everywhere out there right now... If it doesn't have a pic on the verfication page.. don't trust it.... Here are a whole bunch already "caught"

and on a side note I have over 50 slabbed morgans not one of them has "morgan" on the label like this...

All these fake ones you show also have the bar code on the front of the slab.

Too much by how much? I think it would be difficult to get the pair for less than $100, elsewhere and even that price might not be easy.

Common date MS63s ... in my opinion a waste of valuable collector resources.

I'd love to know what shop seeing I'm only 15 min from Littleton, always looking to see new places and coins.

Collect raw morgans, walkers, mercs, SLQ, barber q. Looking at getting into earlier date coins pre 1900s.

I think the price is fair. Collect what you like, not what others think you should. Common dates for sure, but they look nice.

Check out VAMWorld. You will be able to figure out what VAM each coin is easily with those die cracks.

Ok- thanks. Did you look at the eBay link I posted? Are you saying all the PCGS graded Morgans there with "MORGAN" on the label are counterfeits? If you go to the Heritage Auctions website, you can find PCGS graded 1921 Morgans in their archives with "MORGAN" on the label. Do you think those are counterfeits?

Hopefully, he’s not saying that all 1921 Morgan’s with “MORGAN” on the label are counterfeit. Because if he were, he’d be incorrect and impugning sellers of genuine examples.

If I'm reading PCGS Price Guide correctly ($112 + $90), you paid 52% of full retail. In the past I felt good at 70-75% for gold coins.

No, not "all" but this IS the label that is being counterfeited.. As In my 1st post I said I HOPE im wrong and on this one it seems I am. That is a good thing and I'm happy for the OP.. But at this time those "morgan" labels are the ones pouring out of china right now and fooling some of the best collectors out there. As I also said in my 1st post... No matching photos on the verification page, I wouldn't take the risk in the present market.

The "Morgan" labeled Morgan dollars are counterfeit for dates prior to 1921. The 1921 have "Morgan" on the label to differentiate them from their "Peace" counterparts.

One of the other easy "tells" is the lack of "PCGS" in the obverse lower right of the fake holder...

Here's 2 more examples that I personally had graded so yes, the suggestion that labels with 'morgan' are fake is bunk.

With that said nice cherry pick! Good prices and nice looking coins!

I think you did well at that price.

  • Options

You did well. I believe you'd be hard pressed to buy those coins raw for that price. When you take into consideration the grading fees paid to have them stabbed.
    You did very well!
BTW all Morgan's have a VAM. I've learned this recently myself. Just passing this information along. Some VAM's are better than others and most bring no additional value to the coin.
Either way be happy with your purchases. You did well and I highly doubt the coin dealer made much money on the deal. Possibly enough to buy himself a cheap lunch.
