I just won this coin on GC. Like everyone else, it seems, I wanted one of these in high grade when I was a kid.

By the way, the auction description said it was "From Steve's Excellent Collection of U.S. Coins". Anybody know who this Steve fellow is?

    No idea but hope HE sold his coins and not his family selling his collection because of the obvious reasons.

    It's not a colonial so I felt a little out of my depth. I'm not a Lincoln guy. I just wanted a nice one of these. I'll get a 55 Double Die too .

    Common? Yes. Certainly compared to absolute rarities and even some of the colonials in my collection.

    Over priced? They were in demand when I was a kid. From what I’ve seen, they are still in demand today. That consistent, historical demand has driven the price up. I think that demand was driven by really good marketing over the years.

    I used to turn my nose up at these coins. I used to think they were overpriced and always available. But I always found myself paying attention to the really nice ones that I would see come up for sale or at auction. So that marketing worked on me.

    I think it’s a fun coin to own!

    He is machodoc on the Set Registry. I'm not sure if he is just inundated with emails as part of the sales or is not around anymore but I bought a few of his coins and he ignored the set registry removal request.

    I understand the OP’s sentiments. The 1955 DDO has charmed me since being a kid and I’d like to own one. Yet, in the condition I’d like, the cost continues to be prohibitive when there are so many other coins toward which I’d like to put that money.

    Not overpriced, overvalued compared to others in the set. And this one is really nice, so why not? The demand is there, it's the iconic coin collector's coin.

    P.S. I also bought one of Steve's coins, CAC and all.

    Nice looking coin, congrats!

    Regardless of its actual rarity, the demand is definitely there, much like the HR Saint. I'm excited to see what Stewart Blays MS67 RD CAC hammers at. Already 143k including bp with 34 days to go, I think this one could likely set the record.

    You're not sure if you've owned an 09-S VDB before ?!?

    I would definitely remember if I had. ;)

    Well, what can I say? I'm old! Plus I took a 20 year break from collecting, then another 3 or 4 year break, then another 2-3 year break. I've forgotten a lot of the coins I've owned. I've kept records going back to about 2006 though and I couldn't find a record of owning one since then.

    I know the feeling - would you believe as a college student I owned a 1901-S Barber quarter along with other better date coins including a 1918/7 buffalo nickel. Just don't ask me their grades.

    A dealer convinced me to buy them during one Christmas break and said he would let me pay for them over time. In the meantime, he would hold on to them. He probably was hoping I would forget about making the additional payments when I went back school. I fooled him and went back the next day to pay off the balance.

    What did I do with them? Sold them soon after college to buy stamps. At that period in time, stamps turned out to be a great investment.

    I used my signing bonus from my first job after graduate school to buy a PCGS MS65RB S-VDB just because I had wanted one for nearly 30 years. I sold it some time later for a hefty profit and never looked back.
