Show us your upgrades and the duplicate you upgraded

Unfortunately I upgrade much more often than is financially “smart”. It’s better to be patient and wait for the grade you really want for the coin, instead of not having patience, buying a coin, only to upgrade that coin a short time later. Then when you sell that lower graded coin, you often net less than you had paid for it!

Here’s just a very few of the hundreds I have upgraded in my collection. I know that some seeing these will indeed feel they like the lower grade coin(s) better:

Like mentioned above, I try to not buy coins that I’m going to want to upgrade but rather I buy the right coin the first time, but inevitably, you do buy Coins from time to time and then find one better that you want to upgrade…

I usually delete pictures when I sell the coins, but happened to find these, so…

@asheland , I agree with you on each of your two points in your two most recent posts:

1. Collectors don’t like to buy coins that they will end up replacing with an upgrade, but as humans, certain emotions and fears overrule better judgement. It happens to me plenty of times. We have an empty slot, a coin becomes available, and although we prefer one at a higher grade, we wonder “Will a nicer one come along in the grade and eye appeal I want in the next few years, or NOT?” A psychological trick that helps me deal with submitting to this fault, is I then say to myself after buying the upgraded coin and selling the coin that was replaced, “The $xxx loss I took on the lower graded coin sold is “the rent” I paid to have that coin temporarily fill that slot for that time period until this nicer coin came along”.
2. Something important I learned about six years ago that I think is valuable, is when a new coin comes along that’s an upgrade, before pulling the trigger, I now always ask myself “Does this coin in the higher grade have nicer eye appeal than the coin to be replaced, OR is the eye appeal of the coin to be replaced at least as nice as the eye appeal of the higher grade coin? If so, I pass on the upgrade.

Just won this upgrade last night at GC. It's an 1878 MS64CAC and replaces (well kind of since the 1854 is technically a one year type) my 1854 MS62CAC.

Not sure why this is not a type of its own. Easy to see they changed the font DOLLARS.

This was my first toned 1943-D in 67+FB CAC that I picked up at GC.

Then I bought these two together from a private seller. Not sure if either are upgrades. It could take me a few years to decide so I will just hang onto all of them, most likely.
