    My Dad was born in '42. I struggle with wrapping my head around the changes he's seen from his birth to now. It seems so monumentally overwhelming sometimes.

    I was. I have a 1943 mint set. Gave mint sets to relatives: 1945 to my brother, 1949 to my sister, 1954 to my other brother, 1949 to my wife, 1982 to my son, 1922 to my mother, 1919 to my father.

    I was born in 39 and wish I could of afforded to save every coin I could get my hands on from then until 1964.

    I now only have 50 or so 2007 silver eagles and about $100 in silver coins and am thinking of even selling those now.

    Yes that is overwhelming, If you think your dad saw changes, that's nothing. My grandfather, born 1880, died 1983. Grew up on a farm in Iowa. Had horse and buggy to get to town some 10 miles away. Used horse drawn farming implements. Windmill pumped water from well. No electricity until the 1940's. Saw birth of cars, flight, telephone, radio, TV, electronics, computers, rockets, men on the moon, significant advances in medicine, and I am sure I am missing some other significant things. On a darker side, he saw WWI, 1918-1919 pandemic, the Great Depression, WWII, The Holocaust, Korea, Viet Nam, atomic bomb. elimination of silver from circulating coins (had to make it coin related).

    Your father saw many of those as well. and many more since 1983 that have made significant changes in how we live.

    In 1945, my mother was teaching school in Pennsylvania and had no thoughts about me. My father was running his farm and starting a Christmas decorations business. They were married in 1947.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    December. San Francisco. Just added two 45S Philippines to my own set. (5 and 50 centavos). Put sets together for my wife (47), my mom (18) and my dad (12). Dad's set included gold. Mom's set included the Illinois centennial. Fun to put these together.

    July 1943 and Yes, I'm sometimes astounded by the changes I have seen growing up and as an adult! Flat don't understand some of the attitudes I see today, but most of the problems seem to have started with the 'Hippy' movement.

    I think most of today's attitude problems started, not with 'hippy,' as you say, but with those who showed themselves to be embarrassments to whatever generation spawned those embarrassments. Silent, Greatest, Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and now Gen Z, all have produced embarrassments to their respective generations.

    Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.

    Yeah, you've probably got it right, but will tell you I think our country's leadership or lack thereof had a lot to do with it. Guess I'd better watch it, am getting close to the political line!....lol

    Born in 1945. Livin to high on the hog so lost 42 pounds in the last two years. Aim to get back to my "Fighting weight" of 174 pounds. I weighed 155 pounds when I came home from Nam. Working off and on in putting together a set of 1945 MS 67s.
    Hard to find a walker in that condition that pleases me. Cheers.

    In case anyone cares, the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs 4 games to 3 in the ‘45 World Series. One sportswriter opined that because of the war, neither was good enough to win.
