Edited: Just received the grade for this 83-CC. It graded 64+. Could it have graded 65 without the OBV haze?
Is it easy to remove the haze to increase eye appeal?

    Really nice lustre but still too many marks to key cheek area, eagle breast also a bit too busy.

    @JimTyler I wondered about the cheek and rev above eagle capping the grade to a 64.
    @7Jaguars thx.

    I think 64+ is spot on.

    I really like the 64+. If your photos are TV's then I would ask PCGS their opinion if a restoration might help.

    I don't see it as a 65, and the haze might be muting the marks in the field a bit. Little to no financial upside to getting a 65 once you consider the fees involved, and you risk it grading 64 if dipping it makes the marks pop more. If you want a 65, sell it and buy one in the holder.

    Thanks everyone. This is a PCGS TV image.

    I can't tell for certain from the images. However, I think it's possible that what you're calling "haze" might be remnants of toning that has already been dipped off, and for which nothing else can be done, anyway.

    This coin is really a nice MS-63. Whether or not it gets the "Carson City Mint boost" in grade remains to be seen.

    As for haze, what you might gain in a doing away with it, might be lost elsewhere. Remember that that haze is probably oxidized metal. Removing that removes luster.

    I like this photo as it show what 'haze' can potentially do to luster. The obverse and reverse photos appear to be similar in lighting. Looking first at the reverse one can see the luster (hot spots) at about 3 o/c and 9 o/c and they look similar. On the obverse, again the luster is at about the same positions but the 9 o/c luster in the 'haze' area is muted compared to the 3 o/c. Yes you can get upgrades with 'haze' removed (this through pcgs or on your own if you know what you are doing) and/or a coin that did not cac does afterwards. But then take note of what is previously stated above for risk - reward.

    Not a 65.

    64+ is a good day in the grading room for that coin.

    The coin will not 65... I think MFeld's observation is spot on. I think there was an effort to remediate the surfaces and it produced the result we see in the image. The real downside is that further efforts to enhance this coin wiill strip the surfaces to the point of no return. If you don't like this coin... sell it and buy one that meets your expectations
