Lincoln Cent NEWP! 1909-S

I also got this yesterday. I couldn’t pass it up.

What’s cool is that it’s got a really fine wood grain toning, and a LOT of red left!

    An attractive coin. I believe the weak strike is what kept it from a 65. If you zoom in on the Max version of the TrueView you can see the unusual wood grain detail. You can also see a surface feature floating above the first 9 that looks like a letter "D".

    Nice cent.

    It looks similar to a 1909 S MS64RB cent I had graded earlier this year. Mine has a little more color.

    You are right hb, it does appear to be a "D". Pareidolia again, I suppose.

    Man o man! That's a Harsche die #6 1909-S. Very, very scarce and yours is choice uncirculated!
    How much were you sayin' you want for it? >:)

    If a picture wasn't going very well I'd put a puppy dog in it, always a mongrel, you know, never one of the full bred puppies. And then I'd put a bandage on its foot... I liked it when I did it, but now I'm sick of it.

    It's definitely talking to me. Die #6 was the last one used for 1909-S Lincoln obverse. Most 1909-S Lincolns from die #6 have the old reverse (shallow valley 'N'). Others, relatively few, have the new reverse (deep valley 'N'). The OP 1909-S appears to have old reverse. ALL Harsche obverse die #6 1909-S's are scarce. An uncirculated 1909-S from die #6, as the OP's is, is a special, exciting coin. Obverse die #6 with new reverse is scarcest of all 1909-S Lincolns extant, condition aside, however. As you know, the most famous what-turned-out-to-be-counterfeit 1909-S V.D.B. this board has ever seen, called the whispering one by yours truly because of its faint V.D.B., was from genuine Harsche die #6 obverse and had a "new," also genuine, reverse.

    Yes, it's an old out of date book with lots of misinformation that caused @mr1874's imagination to run wild on a 2 month troll of the forum.

    You picked a winner. Very attractive piece. If you ever entertain thought of selling or trading send me a PM and we can talk about it. The main reference to refer to re 1909-S cents is "Detecting Altered Coins, 5th Edition, by Bert Harsche. Harsche lists, with images, all known obverse die varieties of 1909-S Lincoln cents and 3 of the 4 known 1909-S V.D.B. obverse die varieties. 1909-S V.D.B. PCGS Die #1 ('S' high left, tilts cw a great deal) is so scarce that it had not been seen by Harsche by publication day of his 5th, or 6th edition for that matter, of his counterfeit detection guide so because he didn't see it, he doesn't list it. The information in Harsche re 1909-S Lincoln cents without V.D.B. is valid, as valid now in 2022 as when his 5th edition was published in 1973. Harsche's "Detecting Altered Coins" has withstood the test of time, in other words. Don't listen to anyone who tells you different with their nonsense like "outdated." They are naysayers who have no basis in fact to discredit counterfeit detection pioneer Bert Harsche's work.

    Harsche only listed 3 of the 4 currently known mint mark positions, this means the information is outdated. ;)

    Well, Harsche's 1973 information on 1909-S Lincolns without V.D.B., which is what we are talking about here, can't be called "outdated" now can it? ;)

    Have you bought yourself an S V.D.B. yet? If not, I recommend you do so soon before moon prices are being asked for even a lowly condition like mine example of the holy grail of Lincoln cents.
