10 Years 4 Months. 183 Coin Washington Quarter Variety Set Complete.

I started this set at the ripe old age of 55 and had other collector friends say it was possible to complete this set in 10 years. Most of the varieties were picked off ebay and other venues raw and in holders over those ten years. 100 of those coins are varieties.
I have always considered a cherry pick to include all coins, varieties or not that you acquire for under price guide. This 1934 d was the last coin that I have been searching for and finally found this MS 66+ CAC coin to finish things up.
This coin will move me back into 2nd place and I can now start to concentrate on upgrading a few of my early on purchases. I have had a total blast in putting this set together and meeting so many other collectors along the way. The varieties did allow me to get certain coins that I would not have been able to afford or find by trading the tops pops as I found them.
There is NO 1935 DDO and pcgs just will NOT take the coin out of the set. The other coin missing is the 1964 SMS quarter which I doubt I will ever be able to afford or find. So the count is 183 coins.
I will always love the varieties as it made the set a lot more fun to complete. I have already been asked if I will do another series and I can say that the Washington Quarter Series will always be my favorite and I do already try to pick up other varieties in the other series and have no plans to do any other series. Congrats! Enjoy it while you can. The next Cherrypickers' Guide will come out and you might have some more hunting to do. I know we have all been waiting for the next CPG since 2015 but it is getting closer.

Congratulations Tom, I have been along for the ride throughout most of your journey and I have learned so much from you in this series. I doubt I will ever finish my set but am still making progress and finding a cherrypick is always a thrill.

The amount of patience, discipline and just old fashioned hard work that goes into building a set like you have done is massive! A hearty congratulations to you and I hope you have fun with the set in the future, are able to upgrade coins at your pace and perhaps even get PCGS to realize the error of their ways by removing a couple non-collectible coins currently in the set.

do you know off the top of your head if these varieties set(s), quarters specificially, include ALL the FS varieties for the series?
not that you need ANY reason to have to add more coins. just curious as it seems like some are not there from a quick glance.

Maybe PCGS will take a note from NGC and make a few of those coins, like the two you mentioned, "non-competitive, for display only"

Thanks everyone for the comments. @LanceNewmanOCC I know the 100 varieties I have were all listed in the CPG. I have all three volumes of James Wiles Washington Quarter books and there are many in there that pcgs does not attribute yet and the same on Variety Vista. I am sure there will be more varieties to add if they ever release the new CPG...

Congratulations! It's always great to accomplish a goal and have completion.
Now a couple questions. When I first started collecting it was date and mint mark. I'm unfamiliar with the terms 'registry set' and 'variety set'. When I count up just by date and mint mark through 1998 I get nearly 150 and then proofs etc. What would a variety set consist of? Is there a particular year that had a much higher number of varieties? Also have you or will you continue this on with the State quarters and ATB quarters? Thanks, always like to learn.
PCGS created the registry sets so that members can keep track of the coins they purchase and to also compete against other people who are collecting the same Series. I believe there are 1000 of sets from Pennies to dollars. Some of these sets just include the regular coins in that series while other sets offer the Varieties. If you click on the next link i provided you will see this set has 185 coins including all the regular issued coins from 1932 to 1964 and also includes ALL of the varieties for this quarter series.

Now every Series has regular sets or Variety set or Major variety sets. They also have sets that put the proof coins and the regular issued coins in one set. It is just and easy way to keep track of the coins you own and is also fun to see what other collectors are building.
I have also been able to contact other members who are collecting in My series to do trades and buy coins not on the market. I still have no plans to do any of the other years yet but I am putting away two boxes of each of the New quarters with the P and D and S and may someday go thru those. Good luck in your collecting goals....
