    Interesting, thanks. I suspect that much of the differences in the packaging or paper was due to the owners opening and then not replacing exactly the same. Also this shows how coins stored very similarly can turn out somewhat differently as noted by the descriptions.

    Thanks for that article and pictures. I often wonder how many - certainly not a large volume - are stored away in attic or cellar trunks. Perhaps and probably, the original owners are long gone... and the heirs have not even seen them. Cheers, RickO

    I can't even imagine what opening an original 1895 proof set would be like.

    That is the "Time Capsule Collection" auctioned by Centennial Auctions shortly after the 2011Summer ANA Convention in Rosemont. Centennial Auctions set up on the last 2 days of the ANA Convention and I lucked upon their table and was able to view all the coins. Many monsters! I was able to eventually buy or win at auction 4 of the super high grade Proof Indian Cents, 1901 in NGC PR67*RB, 1902 in PCGS PR67RB from Legend, 1904 in NGC PR67RB, and the 1906 in NGC PR67RB. All three NGC coins subsequently crossed to PCGS at the same grade and they remain some of my all time favorite Proof Indian Cents. The 1901 and 1906 sold at Heritage in 2012. They were originally bought at Centennial as part of complete Proof sets by Brian Hendelson. The 1904 came out at Heritage as part of Gene Gardner's holdings. He purchased it as part of a complete 1904 Proof set in 2011 at Centennial.
