Revival: BBCE Box Group Break - 1978 Baseball Cello

Trying to gauge interest in a group buy of a 1978 Baseball Cello Box. We would crack the box and randomly assign cellos to the folks that bought a cello slot. In the past, Steve would give a small discount to our group for the break. I would be happy to run the break, video it, etc. For the 1978 Cello - it would run (before any discount) - about $188 a cello, plus $5 shipping. Ok so anyone interested and I'll formally kick it off for sign-ups?

78 cello boxes FASC are extremely scarce and not likely to surface anytime soon.

I have a very nice unopened 78 BBCE cello box, (not FASC), which I can make available to the Board, if there is interest. Agree with Tim on rarity of FASC boxes.

I would sell it to one known member; but would not want to be responsible for the break. I am too liable to make a mistake with random sequencing and packing! Lol.

I am not an unopened collector, but I think it would be cool if the board did more of this type of thing. It used to be much more common years ago.

I do miss those, I was always lucky and hit. But that was before the prices went crazy.

I think it added to the camaraderie here on the trading cards side of the forum and I loved it when the few that dared ripped and showed what they ended up. I am sure it was a logistical nightmare for those organizing it.

I never ripped any of the packs. I was tempted when we did the Lebron chrome packs and nearly everyone opened theirs and no Lebron was pulled. But the odds were still too far against pulling one so I held out.

Our last big break on this board was an amazing one with a 1971 hockey box break. Unfortunately, only a few of us signed up for packs in that box and it did not fill. I still feel the pain of that one not filling.

I miss the old group break days, also. Prices are so much higher now, too, that it would probably be tougher to fill all the slots for certain boxes but maybe it's something we could reprise if we generated enough interest. Right now, from the 1970s and early 1980s baseball category I see the following boxes available:

    1972 OPC wax ($6,500)
1973 Topps All Series wax ($35,000)
    1977 Topps wax ($6,200)
    1978 Topps wax ($5,250)
    1978 Topps cello ($4,500)
    1979 Topps wax ($3,500)
    1979 Topps cello ($2,350)
    1980 Topps wax ($4,200)
    1980 Topps cello ($4,000)
    1980 Topps super cello ($4,000)
    1981 Topps cello ($650)
    1981 Topps wax ($750)
    1981 Topps wax FASC ($995)
    1981 Fleer wax ($219)
    1982 Topps cello ($695)
    1982 Topps wax ($700)
    1982 Fleer wax ($309)
    1982 Fleer wax FASC ($395)
    1982 Donruss wax ($279)
    1983 Topps wax ($825)
    1983 Topps cello ($1095)
    1983 Fleer wax ($359)
    1983 Donruss wax FASC ($495)

When talking '72 OPC packs, the cards are gum soaked. A simple gum stained card is a best case scenario for those packs. Normally you hope the few cards the furthest from the gum were spared from damage.

I don't even know whether Steve will do a group break with '72 OPC. The last time we did it, he had to refund a whole bunch of people (if I recall correctly).

I’ve opened several 72 OPC packs over the years with mixed results…sometimes they were in great shape sans the gum card, and others the entire pack was a sticky brick of junk…I’d be willing to gamble on a tape intact box with possible major stars showing on the packs inside

I have a few ideas for the potential break. First off, I think we should include all 4 sports and make have more affordable options with some higher end. Additionally, I think it would be smart to include 90's basketball in the mix for the kobe/jordan people. Here's a list of options...

    baseball

    1981 Topps cello ($650) $27/pack
    1981 Topps wax ($750) $21/pack
    1982 Topps cello ($695) $29/pack
    1982 Topps wax ($700) $20/pack
    1982 Fleer wax ($309) $9/pack
    1982 Donruss wax ($279) $8/pack
    1983 Topps wax ($825) $23/pack
    1983 Fleer wax ($359) $11/pack
    1984 Donruss wax ($895) $25/pack
    1984 Topps wax ($425) $12/pack
    1984 Fleer wax ($425) $12/pack
    1984 Topps Rack ($395) $11/pack
    1985 Donruss Wax ($309) $9/pack
    1985 Topps rack ($895) $38/pack

    basketball

    1988-89 Fleer wax ($5995) $167/pack
    1997-98 Bowman's Best pack ($869) $36/pack
    1997-98 Topps Finest pack ($850) $36/pack
    1997-98 Topps Chrome ($1295) $54/pack
    1998-99 Topps Chrome ($1195) $50/pack

    football

    1978 Topps wax ($2500) $70/pack
    1981 Topps cello ($3200) $89/pack
    1982 Topps cello ($950) $40/pack
    1983 Topps wax ($525) $13/pack
    1984 Topps rack ($5250) $218/pack
    1996 Topps Finest ($199) $9/pack
    1998 Topps Chrome ($1695) $71/pack
    1998 Bowman Chrome ($795) $34/pack

    hockey

    1976-77 Topps wax ($1800) $50/pack
    1978-79 Topps wax ($1200) $34/pack
    1984-85 Topps wax ($800) $23/pack

Art - I agree. What should we officially do? I wrote Steve, haven't heard back - but it seems (not to speak for him) - that when you get over 1k he'll often do a 5% or at least something off.

Again, I can pay up front once these fill and then video a break, pack assignment and I'll handle send offs. Lets try to cement something by Monday and we can post up a fill list.

72 OPC is notorious for gum staining but it really depends on how the packs/box was stored through the years. I've pulled a lot of PSA 9s from 72 OPC packs through the years, as well, so you never really know till you open the packs.

I think if we're going to do this, at least a couple of 1970s boxes should be part of the selection. 1977-1980 is reasonably priced and I'd also be willing to take a shot at the 72 OPC tape intact box, too.

Krish, BBCE would handle all of the payments and shipping of the packs when/if the boxes fill, so it would only require keeping track of the pack reservations here on the page.

Ok - so let's get in touch with Steve before we open it up for:

    1977 Topps wax ($6,200) $172/pack
    1980 Topps wax ($4,200) $117/pack
    1980 Topps cello ($4,000) $167/pack
    1981 Topps cello ($650) $27/pack
    1981 Topps wax ($750) $21/pack
    1982 Topps cello ($695) $29/pack

Can we maybe start with this for this break and see how it goes?

Yes, I believe Steve has offered this option in the past for an additional fee so it's something we can certainly inquire about.

I know Steve has been busy the past couple of weekends with the new retail store location, but I am going to reach out to him and expect to get some clarification next week. I think we can get this off the ground by the end of next week.

This is lifted from a previous group break regarding wrapping of racks:

    **BBCE WRAPPING:

Wrapping your rack packs and/or boxes with the BBCE wrapping and labelling is optional. If you choose to do it it will be $8 per item. For rack packs that includes the rack pack holder and the wrapping/labelling. For boxes, it covers the wrapping/labelling. Steve cannot wrap individual cello or wax packs. **
