Stewart Blay's #1 Proof Lincoln Registry Set Is Being Auctioned

After a lengthy hiatus, I visited the forum today looking for some background information on the sale of Stewart Blay's #1 proof Lincoln set on Great Collections:

The-1-Red-Copper-Registry-Set-for-Proof-Lincoln-Cents

To my surprise, there doesn't seem to be an existing thread about such a major numismatic sale. I always enjoyed looking at the displays of his sets at major shows. Given his passion for red copper, I am a bit surprised he's selling this set. Does anyone know if Stewart is leaving the hobby?

He wasn’t nearly as cool to you as you thought - he referred to you as a “copper weeny”, but the correct expression would be “copper weenie”. 😉

Are we going to see threads bashing other high grade proof Lincoln’s for sale down the road?

I’m watching five. We’ll see if pricing stays within reason 13 days from now.

The five I’m watching are all PCGS/CAC. While they’re in very high grades, maybe the ones I’m watching are not his???

All of Stewart's coins are designated with the subtitle "From the #1 Red Copper Registry Set for Proof Lincoln Cents".

EDIT: It appears that most of the coins eligible for CAC did receive the sticker.

I just checked. He has 114 coins on GC, and only 17 have a CAC. The five I’m watching are among those 17. My guess is the pricing will keep me from bidding.

Well again, only eighteen of his proof Lincolns are even accepted by CAC, so not a bad stickering percentage. CAC doesn't "verify" Lincoln proofs minted after 1942.

Very red, very beautiful, and very stickered!

    This is already at $167,500!

It would have been nice to get "Stewart Blay Collection" on the inserts.

Here's a question, registry set winners can get their name on inserts. If one buys a Stewart Blay coin, will PCGS add the collection name to the insert?

Here's the other PCGS PR67+RD for comparison:

This seems moot for @DLHansen as he has his own custom insert :)

But I certainly could go for it myself!

An interesting thing about the GC auctions is that they don't mention Stewart's name. The lots say the following which is ambiguous as to pedigree since there will be a different person that's ranked #1 now that Stewart's set is being sold.

From the #1 Red Copper Registry Set for Proof Lincoln Cents

I personally would like GC to include Stewart Blay's name in the lot description pedigree for tracing purposes.

    Calling @ianrussell :)

The Registry set is called "Red Copper Collection" and the User identified as STEWARTBLAYNUMI. Seems fairly unambiguous considering the set will still be listed in the All-Time Finest section of the PCGS Registry going forward. YMMV.

It would be nice if the Registry Set was opened up publicly after the sale. It's private now so the coins can't be verified on the Registry Set:

    https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/half-cents/lincoln-cents-major-sets/lincoln-cents-basic-set-proof-1909-present/1237

@DLHansen's rankings are interesting. I wonder what the rankings will look like after the sale.

No graded MS or Proof Lincoln is actually Red (partially or fully).

If such a Lincoln was actually Red in color, it would receive from a TPG a designation of RB or BN.

To receive a RD designation such a Lincoln would have to be a bright Orange in actual color.

Can someone explain the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How questions regarding the origin of the RD, RB and BN designations for copper coinage?

Just another example of how strange the hobby is.
