After a lengthy hiatus, I visited the forum today looking for some background information on the sale of Stewart Blay's #1 proof Lincoln set on Great Collections:
The-1-Red-Copper-Registry-Set-for-Proof-Lincoln-Cents
To my surprise, there doesn't seem to be an existing thread about such a major numismatic sale. I always enjoyed looking at the displays of his sets at major shows. Given his passion for red copper, I am a bit surprised he's selling this set. Does anyone know if Stewart is leaving the hobby?

Sigh... remembering why I took the long hiatus.
Try @RedCopper and you’ll have a much better chance of success.😉

I said maybe...
Starting to remember why I enjoyed the last few months...😉
Yes. That's the one!
Maybe 😈

Everyone sells sometime, while I am not a buyer at these levels and prices I will watch and see how his coins do.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
@CoinJunkie Glad you're back....wonder where you went....maybe lost in wine country?

Stewart was very cool to me at the 2008 ANA.
His collection of red copper is the ultimate.
he helped me find Andy when I was putting together a wheat set.
He wasn’t nearly as cool to you as you thought - he referred to you as a “copper weeny”, but the correct expression would be “copper weenie”. 😉

Like telling someone how much you enjoyed their vacation.
Are we going to see threads bashing other high grade proof Lincoln’s for sale down the road?
I’m watching five. We’ll see if pricing stays within reason 13 days from now.

My collecting “Pride & Joy” is my PCGS Registry Dansco 7070 Set:

Not many CAC coins for you to choose from Steve.
The five I’m watching are all PCGS/CAC. While they’re in very high grades, maybe the ones I’m watching are not his???

All of Stewart's coins are designated with the subtitle "From the #1 Red Copper Registry Set for Proof Lincoln Cents".
EDIT: It appears that most of the coins eligible for CAC did receive the sticker.
I just checked. He has 114 coins on GC, and only 17 have a CAC. The five I’m watching are among those 17. My guess is the pricing will keep me from bidding.

Well again, only eighteen of his proof Lincolns are even accepted by CAC, so not a bad stickering percentage. CAC doesn't "verify" Lincoln proofs minted after 1942.
Very red, very beautiful, and very stickered!
This is already at $167,500!
It would have been nice to get "Stewart Blay Collection" on the inserts.
Here's a question, registry set winners can get their name on inserts. If one buys a Stewart Blay coin, will PCGS add the collection name to the insert?
Here's the other PCGS PR67+RD for comparison:
@RedCopper Congrats on the collection and good luck on the sale!
Will you continue to collect?
To avoid possible confusion, the other 67+RD you posted is PR67+RD, not MS67+RD.

Thanks! I've fixed it above!
Some extraordinary red cents in that set. May well see some record cent prices in this group. Cheers, RickO
Not sure Hansen would want it there!
This seems moot for @DLHansen as he has his own custom insert
But I certainly could go for it myself!
This discussion alone is above my head 😬 what a dream red
An interesting thing about the GC auctions is that they don't mention Stewart's name. The lots say the following which is ambiguous as to pedigree since there will be a different person that's ranked #1 now that Stewart's set is being sold.
I personally would like GC to include Stewart Blay's name in the lot description pedigree for tracing purposes.
Calling @ianrussell
The Registry set is called "Red Copper Collection" and the User identified as STEWARTBLAYNUMI. Seems fairly unambiguous considering the set will still be listed in the All-Time Finest section of the PCGS Registry going forward. YMMV.
That vdb proof is horrible - not even fully red. I’d never bid on it
Only those who have been around long enough will truly get this post…
It would be nice if the Registry Set was opened up publicly after the sale. It's private now so the coins can't be verified on the Registry Set:
https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/half-cents/lincoln-cents-major-sets/lincoln-cents-basic-set-proof-1909-present/1237
@DLHansen's rankings are interesting. I wonder what the rankings will look like after the sale.
Well, someone has to bid on it!
No graded MS or Proof Lincoln is actually Red (partially or fully).
If such a Lincoln was actually Red in color, it would receive from a TPG a designation of RB or BN.
To receive a RD designation such a Lincoln would have to be a bright Orange in actual color.
Can someone explain the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How questions regarding the origin of the RD, RB and BN designations for copper coinage?
Just another example of how strange the hobby is.
So @tradedollarnut is the next owner of it? Well played my man!!
Feel free to explain it to the rest of us...
My memory is that he is recalling and pointing out the irony of Stewart talking down a coin here that he's bidding on. And now it's being sold.

All of his MPLs smashed the price guide tonight and set new records. Amazing! Congrats to Stuart.

Congrats to @RedCopper!
Definitely a provenance worth highlighting for the new buyers!
I’m using my 20k post to point out Zions is at 32k.
Fwiw - I had 20k about 6 years ago. Smoething happened with the counts
Okay, what a crazy coincidence is that! I have to save this posterity so here it is
Not sure what happened to the post counts. I don't really keep track of them. If I did, I might stop posting
Probably due to the black t-shirt shortage during the pandemic
Congrats to Stewart - strong results! Texted him yesterday, no reply.
He has plenty of coins left to play with.
So what prices were the MPL cents in Mr. Blay's collection sold for?
1909 VDB - $366k (67+ RD - Gold CAC)
1909 - $155k (68 RD OGH - CAC)
1910 - $166k (68 RD - CAC)
1911 - $41k (66+ RD - CAC)
1912 - $22k (65 RD OGH - CAC)
1913 - $85k (67+ RD - CAC)
1914 - $127k (68 RD - CAC)
1915 - $132k (67 RD OGH - CAC)
1916 - $14k (65 RD OGH - CAC)
1916 (dupe) - $7k (65 RD)
All prices are rounded to nearest $1k, and include buyer's fee (12.5%).
Nice haul for @RedCopper! He can now afford to get his 64RD 58 DDO Trueviewed and show it to us!
All five way too rich for me. No bids placed.
See my post just below this one.

My condolences to the underbidder(s)........or maybe not.
Wow.
Guess I should start cherrypicking raw proof Lincoln cents from 1936 to 1942.
1951 as well. The 1951 DCAM realized $70,312.
