Not another ANA report, but a coin show report from Schertz, TX

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,916 ✭✭✭✭✭

The Saturday coin shows run quarterly here at the Schertz Civic center, making for a nice Saturday excursion to go look at coins and possibly acquire something. The thing about these shows is that you will see the usual "dreck" - scrubbed VF coins being sold as AU or 6th party grading holders. On the other hand, you have a chance of finding some really nice stuff, much of it never making it on a coin dealer website. That's the part that makes attending small shows like these a blast, even if you come up empty handed at times.

As for this show, it was very well attended, with a steady stream of people coming thru the whole time I was there. It wasn't like this a few years ago. Though the crowd did skew older, there went plenty of younger folks working on albums or finding something that just looked 'cool'. With this increased interest, I'm seeing a dearth of nice original classic material, raw or graded. Like a poster from the ANA show mentioned, the supply of decent Seated material seems to have almost dried up. Like any typical show, there are a couple of tables I always pass by, the one dealer that always has scrubbed coins marked as AU or BU, some in self-slabs and the other guy, who prices almost all of his inventory for moon money. Not sure who would pay $100 bucks for a very ordinary toned 1956-D raw cent, but somehow he makes every show.

Below are some pics from the show, including my haul, some raw coins for the bookshelf albums and some nice toned material.

    Nice mix of cool coins.
Was the Dansco-type album already yours, or was it purchased at the show?
I am curious if the price of these has adjusted/come down a bit or if they're still pricey.

    Here are your TrueViews:

If you're willing to wade through a lot of chaff, there is some nice "wheat" to be gleaned at these smaller shows. Thanks for the report. Love the 20ctvs.

I actually got it used at a local show for $15 probably a decade ago. They have gotten pricier since, especially the gold page, which I did get some time back. So the 1907 $10 will have a home!

@Zoins, thanks for posting the TrueViews. In hand the Philippines coin looks better than the TrueView, same with the reverse of the 1967 half.

Nice report! I’m about a 2.5hr drive from this show but have never checked it out - maybe next time!

@ElmerFusterpuck... Thanks for the report and pictures. Nice acquisitions. I loved the small shows when I lived in the PNW by Seattle. Often found some good stuff, and usually prices were negotiable. Sure do miss local coin shows. Cheers, RickO
