I think I'm going to retire, seriously

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think the time has come for me to call it quits. This is not an easy decision, I've spent the last 60 years involved one way or another in coins. I used to enjoy selling on eBay, but over the last 5 or so years eBay has sucked the fun (and profitability) out of selling there. The coin shows obviously took a big hit the last couple of years with Covid. At age 69 I'm slowing down physically and mentally with with what the Doc says is "Mild Cognitive Impairment". And finally, I'm just not having fun anymore.

It's time my wife and I start enjoying each other and spending time (and our children's inheritance) traveling. We plan on spending many months in Great Britain learning more about my 14th Great Grandfather, King James 4th.

I'll send a couple of hundred slabbed coins to Great Collections, some higher end coins to Heritage, some on the BST board, and lastly I'll set up at the Sandy, UT coin show in October. It's been a fun ride, I've learned a lot, and hopefully imparted a little knowledge and humor along the way. I'll still be around haunting the boards here that I have enjoyed for many years.
As Bob Hope once said, Thanks for the memories!

I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

Enjoy retirement. I am amazed how hard the dealers work and in many cases don't get a lot of sales at shows. I just got home from the ANA and there were so many Morgans, Peace Dollars, and raw coinage that looked very much the same from one to the next. I did not see many buyers today. I only saw the public selling to dealers.

It is a good time to be selling off CAC gold coinage. The prices I saw on slabs made my head spin. North of $14,000 for a 65CAC common date $10 Indian, $10,000-12,000 for a couple others. Almost the same for a 66+CAC common Saint here and there. Mind blowing numbers. Even common $3 64CAC coins over $10,000 now with 63CAC around $7,500.

Best of luck selling things out. Sounds like you have a great plan.

If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing then it’s time to move on. That said you need to find things to do that will be mentally challenging. Mental stagnation accelerates the impairment.

    Safe travels!

If your 14th great grandfather is James IV, not only a British monarch, but more importantly a Scottish monarch.

Looking forward to your upcoming sales, we've done business in the past of course and the materiel I bought from you appreciated considerably!

Congrats on retirement and making plans on fun adventures moving forward!
With the quality of the pics of coins out there now, you can enjoy looking at those and still live vicariously through the active collectors around here if you plan on remaining being member here as well.

How about keeping a box or two of 20?
On James IV, I believe he was a Scottish King.

Enjoy your retirement! Good luck in Scotland learning about James IV. Something tells me a few of his coins will end up in your collection to be passed on to his 15th and 16th great-grandchildren.

I'm somewhat saddened to hear of this, not because I know you other than through here, but that this time has come. Must be a bit bittersweet? I've always appreciated your participation here and your icon pic is classic and unforgettable. I wish you all the best and do hope you'll stick around and share your wisdom. Sincere best wishes UtahCoin!

I wish you and your wife the absolute best. I was stationed in Germany for 3 years in the 60's/70's and went to my home place in England, called BowlingHall. Great visit. I've enjoyed your posts for a long time and will miss them, but hope you visit back with us upon the occasion with your wit and wisdom.

I think someone in the family made a connection to King John of the Magna Carta era.

    Does that make us cousins?
