Coins as gifts to you? Hits and misses

bennybravobennybravo Posts: 1,950 ✭✭✭

We're all known as coin collectors to those in our circles that we know. My first wife in the early nineties gave me an 1826 bust half from a local flea market. It's in a PCI AU53 holder (which I submitted back when PCI was a thing) and it's properly graded and still in my collection. What's your favorite coin received as a gift, or what's something you got that you totally hated?

My brother gave me an 1896 Morgan for my 50th birthday back in '07 that he got from a bank in Phoenix in the 70's or so...it'd been in an envelope for about 30 years and shows beautiful blue toning. No pic at the moment to share, but I like it a lot.

A coworker who found out i collect coins gave me this. He legitimately thought it was highly collectible.

I have been extremely lucky because my late wife helped me a lot with the hobby, especially to complete the gold page of the Dansco 7070 with quite a few memorable gifts. <3

Then there was a 1908 No motto Saint Gauden's double eagle given to me by my younger brother which I treasure.

After my uncle passed away in April of 2021, I had helped to settle his estate because my aunt has early stages of Alzheimers and I am like the son she never had.
She was very happy and thankful, hence got me an 1878 Trade Dollar proof graded PF-64 by NGC because she remembered an old discussion about coins. Also gave me some loose change from other countries she found around the house before relocating from NYC to Texas.

A 1959 Proof Set from my Dad, Christmas 1972. Still have it.
An 1896 BU Morgan from work colleagues, Christmas 2006. Still have it.
A 2004 WI-D PCGS-67 State Quarter in a flag holder from a collector friend, fall 2015. Still have it.

Nothing lottery-worthy from a monetary point of view, but very fond memories that are, as they say, priceless. I don't think I'm wired to hate a gift.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

@1630Boston sent me a counterstamped Ike a few years ago. Not sure if I have the picture, but definitely still have the Ike!
