Future catalysts may require much less platinum and other PMs

New catalysts make efficient use of precious metals

"Nanoscientists from Utrecht University have devised a new and promising way to make catalysts in which the amount of precious metals needed is reduced by a factor of 10. . . The researchers expect that it will be possible to use the technique on an industrial scale in existing processes within one to two years."

If this comes to pass, how severely is it likely to impact the price of platinum and palladium?

    I'd say - pretty significantly.

If it becomes financially feasible, it would have a significant impact on those PM's. Unless purity becomes a factor in some applications. Cheers, RickO

Let's hope it decreases theft of catalytic converters by the same, or greater factor.

Define the future..... And don't forget hybrids which require catalytic converters. 30-40% of US drivers are not in a position where BEVs make financial sense. Even if ICE-only cars disappear over the next couple decades, when would you expect hybrids to become extinct? In 50 years?

The wife wanted her engagment ring made with platinum. I don't have the heart to tell her about the price action the last 10 years. I guess more pain to come.

Impress her. Make it with rhodium.

I sure hope they do not mess with gold.... I like my gold pure, don't be bastardizing the element with catalysts. :s Cheers, RickO
