2022 Halves are being released into circulation

olympicsosolympicsos Posts: 982 ✭✭✭✭

What's the point of the mint selling premium bags and rolls then.

They minted more JFK's than there was demand. It is just Money, and the mint needs to sell their excess inventory.

It will be interesting to see if they actually circulate. I will be watching the change drawers at market checkouts. Cheers, RickO

Not a chance. Inconceivable now, but in 1971, the Denver mint struck more halves than quarters (302M vs 258M).

Aren't stored coins worth more on their books to the Mint/Treasury than circulating ones? I thought I read previous posts on that topic.

The article indicates they also released the 2021 JFK's into circulation as well as now the 2022's. That's somewhat good news for me, as my sons & I still need a few P's & D's of both years to keep our collections up-to-date. But I doubt any of my local banks will have any interest in ordering in any rolls or boxes of them. Nor can I see where any of the demaand for them would be coming from in the general world of commerce that they had to resort to this step in the first place. But hopefully, we'll at least be able to work out some trades with other Forum members who have better luck than we do on the halves.

Now if they would only do the same for N.A. $1 coins as well going back thru 2020, I'd be a happy camper.............

I don't know Rick, from 1964 have they ever? I don't believe I have ever received a half dollar in change.

I wish the vending machine industry would update all vending machines to take dollar coins and half dollars. Then drop the nickel slot. That would reflect inflation and encourage using those higher denomination coins.

Although that would be only a temporary help as more also get credit card integration.

It’s reflecting reality. It either happens in one of two ways: either raise the prices and have to carry more small change or you allow for higher denominations.

The only cure for inflation would be to go back to a very different monetary policy. That won’t happen, though. The horse left the barn, passed the town boundaries, and is already venturing into outer space.

What do they mean by "circulation quality"? They have to be uncirculated. I guess they are not referring to condition, just no proofs.

With coins being worth less because of inflation and the decrease in redemptions due to covid restrictions the FED vaults have been emptying of coins. To make up for the shortfall in quarters apparently some districts in the NW have been releasing half dollars and ordered more in 2021 and 2022. The mint has been releasing coins to circulation intermittently over several years.

I figured I was the last person left who uses coins in vending machines.

A little while ago I pumped $6 in quarters into a parking meter. I am sure most people use an app.

I ran a Baseball concession stand. I got rolls of half dollars when available to make change. The kids loved them. The adult workers didn’t want to hand them out. They only wanted to give the kids quarters. Why? So much easier for a 5 year old to hold one coin instead of two.

Maybe it has to do with the area of the country? I know these coins are out there. Like today's small dollar coins, I just never see them or receive them in change.

I also think the mint released "NIFC" halves over the past few years to supplement the coin shortage.

I feel this can be likened in a way to the SBA dollars. Those were made in 1979 and 1980 for circulation, then came the eighteen year gap in which none were made whatsoever. 1999 rolls around and the reserves are basically emptied out and so the Mint has to make more. The half dollar was last issued in 2001 and gets re-issued in 2021. Obviously the NIFC coins were meant to satisfy collector demand, and I suppose had that policy been in place in the 1970s and 1980s, the SBA dollar would have continued to be minted each year for mint sets and annual sales. Just something I've noticed.

Collectors want them and the mint makes money on selling bags and rolls. Personally, I do not buy mint products anymore. I just wait until I find them in circulation.

They're releasing only a few million and most banks will not issue them except on request so they are highly improbable to start circulating. All coins come from banks so without their blessing or their arm being twisted by the FED it just won't happen.

In response to TurtleCat's post regarding updating vending machines to accept halves & dollars....... I thought that at least most of them HAD been updated for dollar coins a while ago - - but doubt they were for halves. And with more & more vending machine commerce going the way of credit cards, Venmo, & other forms of payment, and away from coins, I just don't see how it would be financially feasible for machines to be retrofitted for halves. It would likely be a losing proposition, especially if halves are limited-circulation in the end. And the industry, absent a profit-making angle for it, would likely resist anything short of a government mandate. Just my opinion.

Totally agree that it won’t happen but if the government wants them to circulate then every opportunity should be taken to reduce the friction in the exchange of the coins for commerce.

It will be one more coin that confuses foreign visitors. It’s bigger than the current dollar, but only worth half as much. The same is true for the nickel and the dime.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Well one I don't have $500 "just" to put in a new savings account and second, there is no way they let regular individuals like myself order directly from the Federal Reserve? And my guess is they'll only be new 2021/2022 halves won't they? :(

And I've mentioned this before but am I the only one here who thinks they should've put the Presidents on the halves and not the dollar coins, seeing as how the Presidential Seal is on the back of the half dollar and thus would match the theme?

The halves most likely will be circulated rolls, with 2021 and 2022 coins possibly mixed in. I have not gotten a BU box yet, but it is possible. I do not know if there is a way for a regular person like you to order directly from the federal reserve. You need to go to a bank. Ok, if you don't have $500 try $300 or even less BUT if you open a savings account for under $300 most banks will charge you a fee.
Up until last week, I got 2 - $500 boxes of half dollars per week. You need to save up some money to be able do this,

Wish the mint did the dollar coin program again like 10 yrs ago and/or include halves too,

Getting halves/dollar coins from the bank is more of a pain than it's worth.

The seigniorage seemed like it was worth doing until others abused the program. The mint should have made the rules a little tighter.

Wasn't another "kiss of death" for halves circulating when the casinos stopped or severely cut back on using them? I remember there were some specific JFK dates where a majority of circulating ones were so beat up from dropping onto each other into payout trays.......

I'd like to propose a new rule: "No series with a historical figure on the obverse can go on longer than that person lived". If that were the case, by now we should have new designs for everything from cents thru halves!
