GTG on this 1834 bust half…..GRADE REVEALED, WELL SORT OF

I’ve had this 1834 PCGS bust half for several years and don’t post it that often but it’s definitely a favorite. It also happens to be stickered by CAC.
GTG and tell us your reasons for your guess.

I don't know this one, so I'll guess.

The high points, especially the obverse, seem to have a little bit of a "glossiness" or "smoothness" that makes me think some luster is gone, and that would be the limiting factor. The reverse has some striking weakness, and the claws seem to exhibit the same "sheen", but for actual wear, I don't really see any.

I'm going to say 58 based on the above, and reserve the right to say 62 in hand.

    Pretty coin!

I'm at 58. Too much rub on the cheek to let slide for Cabinet Friction IMHO.

When I go AU with some wear - it's a MS weak strike. When I go MS weak strike it's and AU with some wear. So I say AU58 or MS64 - If it is MS weak strike it is a beautiful coin!

I think it is a 58. Not shocked if it is 55. Just can't see it as MS.

looks like you're tapped into the aether as well before reading your post, my thought was:

au58 gold sticker since cabinet friction and similar has been getting a lot of leeway.

beauty of a CBH. if not holdered and stickered, the rev rim at k12 would concern me.

I think it's in an MS holder, but my interpretation of the images is that the obverse central luster is a bit muted so I will go with MS63.

58, or weak strike mid MS . Hard to tell without the coin in hand.

A trick question! I like it, usually the bean goes the other way of the holder, so this is kind of cool! Nice coin!

I thought weaker strike on the wing tips... I think she's in a 63 holder

Ok, so the ACTUAL grade of this truly uncirculated coin with no breaks in luster or wear on its high points is….an educated guess, since it’s currently in a PCGS AU58 holder with a gold CAC sticker.

My personal opinion is that it’s somewhere between a 63 and 64, but definitely NOT a 62.

The luster give the surfaces a beautiful liquid-like appearance, and the “wear” or flatness that those see on the high points is due to a slightly weak strike.

I believe you on that...and CAC. I don't think I've seen a gold CAC that wasn't under graded by at least one grade.

That's a notable gap between assigned and perceived. The sticker sort of codifies it. They're saying that what PCGS saw as wear is not actually wear. That's a factual assertion.

The gap isn't nearly as significant as it might sound. Keep in mind that the grade 59 isn't used and 60, rarely is. By way of illustration, the NGC pops for 58, 60 and 61 are 571, 8 and 113, respectively.
