Carson City beauty - fresh score!

Got this little frosted puppy at the Raleigh Coin show recently. Then kinda forgot about it - but had a look and she is really interesting coin. Tried to get a few different light angles... What do my expert friends think about it?

Well to me it looks AU cleaned, I hope I'm wrong in my interpretation of the photos.

Yes it is a circulated example - and was priced as such. Don’t see any evidence of cleaned but wouldn’t be surprised. I just thought it had a nice look.

I'm not sure what you expect if not our honesty.

The photos are not good but the luster variations around the letters do suggest some form of cleaning. But, again, it could be the photos.

Looks like a really nice AU. Can't tell if it was cleaned or not, but it looks nice.

Looks better here, although that's partly because the luster doesn't show.

after tens of thousands of images, usually it is more effective to move the lights instead of the coin; although depending on your camera and its ability to take quality pics, it may how back your efforts, no matter how good you may be. some cameras simply don't have the pixel capability. feel free to share the make/model and we may be able to help.

nice to have an 81-cc. nothing wrong with an imperfect example so long as you didn't pay too much. they are quite common, all of them.

Sorry if that came off as harsh, that is not my intent. I just mean that the coin looks AU and with a lite wipe, not scrubbed or a harsh cleaning. The last of your original photos seem to suggest some wispy hairlines is what me think cleaned.

If you're lucky it'll go 61 or 62. I'd call it unc details cleaned.

Wanna learn something? Turn your phones flashlight on and look at it while you shine that over it. Rock the coin at various angles to your eye. The hairlines will pop at certain angles and be plain as day.

Agree completely on the coin being cleaned.
Love the fact that it is a Carson City but the surfaces do not look original.

    Agree with the unc details.

The best way I learned... lots and lots of scanning of auction. Archive photos.
Looking, not only at the gorgeous coins; but the problem coins also.

Would be a great Dansco coin.

I also agree that the surfaces appear AU with a possible cleaning in the past. Stop posting if you want, but better images would help everyone on both ends of the discussion.

The pricing curve on these is very flat. For about $100 more you could have a nice 63.

I for one think it is a lovely coin, and always like CC dollars. Very nice coin and will note that you did NOT post it as a GTG.

Sell and get one that is not cleaned. Probably a trade off in price or very close. These are always sought after and there is someone that will get you out from under. I do think is is MS but cleaned as there are hairlines on the obverse (little parallel scratches from wiping with a cloth?).

At this point,I would spend money on slabbed dollars, not grading fees. When I started my set,I went to a show to buy the best common 64 morgan in the room.I looked at them all. With time, you'll learn whats good and what you should leave behind. No amount of GTG or looking at pics will replace a day at a show looking at coins in hand, imo.Good luck !!

I'm not convinced that it is "cleaned". It might have haze from PVC or something on it. It might be worth a soak in solvent such as acetone.

I may be getting old... or maybe just my eyes are.... ;) However, I think that coin would straight grade if submitted. Cheers, RickO

It isn't slabbed ... why not?

It's not worth slabbing. Prices are flat across a wide range of grades. It would be lost money to slab an AU or low UNC.
