Have you suffered a hobby related injury?

BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭

So, on Friday night I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep. I grab my tablet and see a new listing on eBay of interest. To get a better look I jump out of bed to go boot up my desktop and hurt my left knee doing so. Figured I can't be alone... Anyone else have a nerdy war story to share?

Larry Briggs has a few stories that would fit this category, and I've only heard the ones that have resulted in hospitalization.

I liberated a coin from one of the older NGC holders a few years ago. The slab shattered nicely, but not so nice was the triangular shard that I jammed right into my thumb. It took a week to heal.

Well look what the cat dragged in. It's been a while since I heard anything about you. Welcome back.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

Eyestrain from looking at coins through magnifiers. I never crack out coins from slabs, but I could see me getting cut on a sharp plastic shard. :#

From coin collecting? Maybe a papercut or a staple scratch...

I used to rock climb though... I've got a couple of stories there. ..and one epic mountain bike ride springs to mind...

Paper cuts from CRH, maybe some undiagnosed nickel poisoning, definitely increased stress levels in the last moments of some ebay auctions.

I was building a display for some of my coins and used epoxy resin to help fill in some holes in the wood. Next morning i could barely open my eyes. Turns out im allergic to the resin....

Hobby related injuries include: multiple staple punctures and scratches in and on my hands, seeing coins I have sold get grade increases from buyer resubmissions, hurts, and my monthly budget has been injured a time or two also.

While waiting my turn in a fairly crowded shop, I figured I'd pass the time pawing through a huge "junk" box full of coins in 2X2's. While digging deep, I took a staple a good distance under the fingernail. I loudly blurted "the" forbidden word to use in front of a lady (yeah, that one). Luckily, only one lady in the shop, and she subscribed to the cursing is excused when an injury is involved rule, so all was forgiven.

Just minor scrapes from shards from cracking TPG holders, and poking of fingers with staples from trying the carefully liberate coins from 2x2s. Plus any long-term effects of acetone vapors.

Larry Briggs mistook dip for his blue Gatorade within the past year. This is one of the hospitalization stories I was referring to. I told him to switch to the pink stuff unless he's servicing his van.

Dropped a fresh Mint roll of 2000 P Sacagawea dollars right on the big joint of my big toe a couple years ago...purple dark blue beauty mark for about 3 weeks. Got it x-rayed because I fully thought I broke it.
Also all my shoes hurt for a couple weeks lol.

Was VERY happy it landed on my foot and not the wooden edge of my cabinet.
The best coin in that roll went to our host hoping for a 68, got a 67.

    True story.

Almost threw out my back in the new apartment where we had just moved into, trying to single handedly lift and move my precious stuff in huge storage bins close to the patio door since the fire alarm went off and many fire trucks were on the scene.
Luckily it turned out to be a false alarm since someone had yanked the emergency switch, but it sure helped me get priorities right and seek alternate storing methods.

Ditto on poked bloody fingers from non clinched staples on carboard 2x2's lookin thru boxes at shows.
Went to using a pen or pencil tip to poke open the 2x2' mylar to extract coins. Never touch the staples any more.

A few years ago I went to the local coin shop, I was trying to finish my set of large Canadian cents. The store had them in 2 by 2’s since over 40 years ago, the staples were rusted and the prices was low. The owner said the box hasn’t been touched in over 20 years I’ll sell you the coins at the prices marked. So I was all excited until I realized that many were corroded or with environmental damage. While looking at one I stabbed my finger with a rusty staple and started bleeding on a few coins. I ended buying them as I couldn’t leave them covered with blood. While cheap there wasn’t one coin that I needed that I bled on. Ended up dipping them in acetone and giving them away.

On a serious injury (Health) I have been in the Coin business for 45 years. In 2008 developed Bladder Cancer. I know of 5 coin dealers in New England alone, that have or were all in the business for 30 years or more that got Bladder Cancer. The result of handling dirty silver, wheat cents ,sterling and scrap. If you don't keep your hands clean the metals go to the low point of your Bladder. A study should be done of this and I would like to hear of others around the country that have also had this happen. Most important! wear gloves or wash constantly if you handle lots of these items.
