what happened to all my images???

the forum has undergone a few code changes and a lot of posts have been nerfed due to that. the upgrades were/are nice but came a steep cost as i all but refuse to make elaborate posts anymore because each time dozens/hundreds of posts have to be updated to accommodate the new coding language.

if you have image hosted in the same location, it is simple matter of putting that url into the new upload image code. all you need to do is probably hit quote on your post to see the original location as that has worked for me in the past. now if they were directly uploaded long ago, not sure what to do about that one.

it has been a crazy journey hunting down the old StacksBowers archives which was lost or hidden with their photo which after 5 years of frustration I finally found!,

Now I have to contact Todd Pollack to find out where his better photos are located.

Problem solved and Todd’s photos restored!

i got a crazy telephone call demanding why this cancelled die was not graded by PCGS or NGC let alone getting stickered by CAC.

    Incredible Mike!

By matching the cancellation marks with known reverse dies with mintmarks, I would guess the that the 1872 was used in Carson City and the 1882 was used in San Francisco.

WOW .. this die is celebrating its 150 th anniversary!!!

I wonder what the market pundits think it would sell for in 2022?

Not that I am looking to sell it but trying to keep myself educated.

Daniel Carr recently struck some morgan dollars from cancelled dies... it would be mighty cool to have a cancelled $20 overstrike.

Does anyone know if a reverse double eagle die was found with the others?

It's all about what the people want...

I know its been almost 11 years since you won it, but I think you got an incredible deal back then.

Lakesammman : I was not kidding. Only NGC currently offers such a huge slab. It is scary shipping such cancelled die by USPS to NGC, I spoke with JA and he promised that eventually but not very soon CACG will offer such a huge slab for the cancelled die. That would allow me to hand deliver/pick up such cancelled die from CAC instead.

It will be protected and not put back to work minting restrikes. Fred Weinberg, the former owner and the consigner, also resisted putting it back to work and stressing a then 125 year old die. It is now 151 years old. We must be kind to our elderly ancestors!

At long last I was successful in getting this cancelled die slabbed by NGC as both PCGS and CACG does not slab cancelled dies due to its extreme rarity and unusual size and shape.

I will be picking it up either Thursday or Friday at the NGC booth at the FUN show.

I requested that Fred Weinberg’s name be shown on the NGC label as the former owner for pedigree/ provenance purposes.

I have handled (3) Obv Dies for the $20 Liberty, 2 of them I posted above.

I have never heard of a Rev Die for the $20 Liberty in private hands.

    Agreed as well.

If @FredWeinberg is at the FUN show, I will make sure he gets to see this slabbed cancelled die first. But do not know where he will be if he does attend the FUN show. Mike Byers is second. But do not know if he has a table at FUN. I am sure that they are curious as well as I am to see how NGC slabs the cancelled die.

I was at FUN last year. Didn’t attend this year as I am working on a numismatic project that will be made public soon.

NGC does an excellent job slabbing dies.

I just had NGC slab these:

Fred, at either the Seattle or the Portland ANA, some guy showed me an uncancelled S-Mint Seated Liberty Dollar reverse die. He was shopping it around asking for offers, and would not name a price. I made an offer and never saw him again.

    Did you ever see it?

I won’t be at the FUN show this year, after attending it for 50 years in a row.
I’m going to try to make the show next January – – I haven’t been to it in 5 years, and I miss seeing my friends and the camaraderie.

Tom, I don’t believe I was shown that seated liberty $1 reverse die –
that would’ve been around 1996 or so.

I did have a Morgan Dollar Obv. die that was X canceled, And I sold it about 25 years ago for 10 grand-
Kinda wish I had kept it…….

I came to pick up the 1872-CC $20 cancelled die. NGC really screwed up.They never even took the cancelled die out of the StacksBowers red box or even slab it with a label. NGC apologized and promised toship it to me at no charge. I did not want them to ship it as if it gets lost it could not be replaced. So i would have to wait until next January to pick it up.

Should I request NGC to refund the express grading fee they charged me last January? Your opinions is requested.

For us novices....how does one get an "uncancelled" die ? Aren't they supposed to be defaced/destroyed as soon as they are used so the threat of counterfeiting is nil ?
