This is a pair of agricultural medals from Ottley of Birmingham. One is a newp.

Won these yesterday (Tuesday) in auction:

Denmark, Knud den Store, 1016/1018-1035. Very rare Danish imitation of his English penny (SCBC-1157), with the obverse inscription: + CNUT REX DENORUM

And his son, Hardeknud, issued 1039-1040, but in the name of Æthelred (II of England).

They are gigliatos from the island of Rhodes minted under the auspices of the Knights Hospitallers. Gigliato means “lily” and references the coins reverse with the flowers intertwined with a cross. The type was introduced in Naples and was roughly equivalent to a grosso with about 4grams silver weight. The type spread around the eastern Mediterranean.

These two coins are from the knights under two different Grand Masters.
The first is Juan Fernandez de Heredia (1377-1396).
The second is Raymond Berenger 1365-1374.

Jean Elsen had an auction focused on crusader states recently - there were many of this type. I lost out on a couple but these seem pretty nice for type to me!

I recently came across a (I think) Taler-sized silver coin from Malta. I didn’t pay much attention to the venue. Maybe an upcoming auction? Varesi, perhaps? Anyway, I’ve always enjoyed Crusader issues. Teutonic, Hospitaller, etc. — and not just from the Orders.
